GE Introduces New Primary Humidity Instrument; New Optica(TM) Series Improves Measurement Precision Capabilities for Pharmaceutical, Automotive and Aerospace Applications

Wilmington, MA - April 24, 2003 - GE General Eastern Instruments, Inc. a business unit of GE Industrial Systems and the General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), has announced the availability of the new Optica(TM) Series primary humidity instrument, a chilled mirror hygrometers that advances the capabilities of precision humidity reference instruments by offering data logging and Ethernet connectivity.

The Optica Series is NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) traceable and is used as a transfer standard to calibrate industrial and building automation as well as weather and humidity telemetry sensors and instrumentation. Because the Optica Series delivers long-term reliability and precision, it is ideally designed for pharmaceutical process validation, automotive and aerospace engine emissions and testing, heat exchanger, and air conditioning performance testing and fuel cell research.

Available for a variety of applications including bench top, rack mount or wall mounted units, the Optica features a bright VGA display, analog and digital outputs as well as self-diagnostics and a user-friendly interface. Users can access recorded data and menus for setup parameters and diagnostics via the Internet or intranet using standard browsers. These instruments provide primary fundamental humidity measurement in terms of dew point temperature by utilizing optical feedback to control a rhodium or platinum mirror to equilibrium where the mass of frost or dew is constant. The temperature of the mirror is measured by precise platinum RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector).

The Optica monitor interfaces to GE chilled mirrors, temperature and pressure sensors to provide readout and data acquisition of any humidity parameter. Optica hygrometers provide a range of -80 to +85°C dew point via a choice of four interchangeable chilled mirror sensors with accuracy of ±0.15°C. In addition, the Optica is equipped with an Ethernet port and TCP/IP address enabling to be access via the internet/intranet any time or any where in the world that is connected to the internet. The unit is embedded with a Java Applet, which runs in standard web browsers. Users have the ability to view real-time readings, upload recorded data and access set up parameters and diagnostics.
