Original Press Release:

Thomas & Betts' Color-Keyed® 14-Ton Hydraulic Crimping and Cutting Tools Offer Superior Compression, Versatility and Ergonomic Design

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - March 28, 2006 - Thomas & Betts now offers superior compression for terminal crimping and cable cutting, while reducing operator stress and risk of injury, with the introduction of Color-Keyed ® 14-Ton Hydraulic Crimping and Cutting Tools. Available in manual and battery-powered models, the tools protect operator hands and facilitate use in tight spaces with compact, ergonomic design.

"The crimping and cutting compression makes these tools useful in a variety of environments," said Jerry Woodward, senior product manager for Thomas & Betts' Industrial Products Group. "They're effective when installing or making connections in telecommunications, industrial and electrical contracting applications. The ergonomic design enables a reduced level of force required to crimp or cut, which reduces the stress on the operator's hands and, along with it, the risk of injury. Their use with hydraulic systems offers the operator greater portability and versatility."

The new hydraulic tools provide 14.6 tons of crimping or cutting force and the crimp tools use standard Color-Keyed® 15500 series crimp dies, available separately. A dual-speed action pump offers fast advancing ram speed for approach of die to connector and slower, more powerful speed for crimping. Both include a carrying case.

The 14-Ton Manual Hydraulic Crimping Tool (catalog number TBM14MC) features a pressure-release system that can be activated easily at any stage of compression and a built-in safety valve that bypasses the oil supply at maximum pressure. It crimps up to 900 kcmil copper and 750 kcmil aluminum connectors.

The 14-Ton Battery-Powered Hydraulic Crimping Tool (catalog number BPLT14BSCRI) is lightweight, self-contained and balanced for single-handed operation. It also offers a quiet, low vibration operation and automatically displays residual battery capacity after each crimp cycle. The tool, head, case, oil and battery are fully insulated to protect the operator from contact with energized systems, and the mechanically interlocked operating buttons prevent accidental activation of the tool. The tool includes a 14.4V Nickel Metal-Hydride (Ni-MH) battery, spare battery, battery charger and shoulder strap. It crimps up to 750 kcmil copper and 600 kcmil aluminum connectors.

The portability of the new battery-operated pump makes using the new Color-Keyed® 14-Ton Remote Hydraulic Crimping Head (catalog number TBM14RH) and 14-Ton Remote Hydraulic Cutting Head (catalog number TBM40HCRH) easy and convenient. The Crimping Head on the battery tools provides greater flexibility with 180-degree rotation, and the jaw opening of 1.65 inches enables easy insertion and removal of large compression terminals and joints. The Cutting Head features heat-treated, high-strength blades for clean cuts and a long service life that will cut cable up to 3 1/4 inches in diameter. Both remote heads feature a quick automatic coupler that connects easily to the new portable pump or other hydraulic systems with a working pressure of 10,000 psi.
