How to View dataTaker Data Files in Excel

Using the Bestselling Data Logging Solutions from dataTaker

CHESTERLAND OH - To download data from dataTaker dataloggers for viewing in Excel, first connect to the dEX web server in the dataTaker by typing the IP address (as given on the data logger's display) into your browser. Click on the 'Monitor the Logger' button on the homepage, which brings up the main monitor window. Now click on the 'Retrieve Data' button on the left-hand side.

Now you'll see 3 buttons giving you the option to retrieve all the data, data in a certain range, or new data acquired since the last download. Click on the option you want, specifying any start/end range. You have two ways to retrieve the data: either in .DBD or .CSV format. .DBD format is not human-readable, so many users prefer .CSV, which arranges the data in convenient text format. After choosing your format, click the 'Retrieve Now' button. You'll be prompted to choose your save destination, with the default given as the logger's serial number_CONFIG_year/month/day/time.csv (or .dbd).

Now the data logger will download the data onto your desktop or preferred save location. First open Excel and then open the data file. The timestamp column will be given in its own format because Excel doesn't have a native format, and many users will want to reformat it to make it readable. To do this, click on the timestamp column to select it, then right-click and select 'Format', then pick 'Custom Format'. Now select "mo/day/year hh:mm" and add ":ss_0" for seconds or fractions. The final custom format should appear as "m/d/yyyy hh:mm:ss_0". Click 'Ok' and timestamp will now appear as the right format. Column B gives the time zone, while Column C is where the data begins, arranged across in columns.

If your data logger is setup with multiple schedules, all the data will go into Column A first, i.e. it will present all the data for Schedule A first, then all data for Schedule B directly after it, etc. Often, users will want to view this data in chronological order, and this is easily performed by clicking the 'Select all' arrow box just to the left of Column A, then clicking on the 'Data' tab, then the 'Sort' button. Now in the 'Sort by' dropdown, choose 'Column A'. The data will now be listed in time order.
