Original Press Release:

New Adhesive for Perfect Binding

BRIDGEWATER, NJ--A new, low-temperature, hot melt adhesive for perfect binding has been introduced. This product was designed for application at 250 degrees F. According to the manufacturer, this specialty adhesive offers excellent adhesion. The resulting strength is just as high or surpasses that of traditional hot melt adhesives. Other benefits include low odor, good color, low energy use, reduced burn severity hazard, and less maintenance.

Furthermore, this new product which is called COOL-BIND® Excel adhesive gives good performance with any combination of equipment because of its fast setup time and long open time. As a result, bookbinders can operate their equipment as slow or fast as they wish and other considerations permit.

The lower temperature requirement of 250 degrees F leads to less char on the spinners. This permits a smoother application. Thus, bookbinders achieve the same strength as hot melts requiring higher temperature but less adhesive is needed. COOL-BIND® Excel adhesive may be applied at 18 to 20 mils. Conventional adhesives are typically applied at 25 to 30 mils.

"When comparing this hot melt adhesive-based binding technology with traditional perfect binding, this advanced adhesive enables book producers to accelerate production while reducing overall cost," says Xaviar Ardanaz, marketing manager, Bookbinding, National Adhesives. In comparing this new hot melt adhesive with glue derived from animals, the COOL-BIND Excel adhesive eliminates problems with paper wrinkling. Such problems result from moisture migration from the glue into the paper. There's no moisture in the COOL-BIND adhesive while there's considerable moisture in animal glue. Wrinkling leads to rejects or customer complaints.

COOL-BIND Excel adhesive is suitable for use with machines made by Heidelberg, Kolbus, Muller-Martini, Wohlenberg and other manufacturers.
