Horlick Ships a Motor-Generator Set Used as a 60 Hz to 50 Hz Frequency Converter.
Randolph, MA — The Horlick Company, Inc. recently shipped a motor-generator set used as a 60-50 Hz frequency converter to an American manufacturer who supplies equipment to the mining and oil industry.
The frequency converter shipped was a Horlick Model 50SC-303. It is rated at 37.5 KVA and will be used to convert 60 Hz power available in the customer's facility to the 50 Hz power required to test their products prior to shipment overseas. This particular motor-generator set was designed to operate at a variety of 50 Hz output voltages such that it could be used to test equipment going to a wide variety of countries throughout the world.
The customer had initially found Horlick's website through a Google search. They later contacted Shawn Hennessey, Horlick's Vice President of Engineering, to discuss the customized options that their application would require.
This project was unique in that the customer wanted the ability to operate at standard and non-standard 50 Hz voltages to include 690V, 480V and 400V. The Horlick Company worked with their generator manufacturer to have a custom 690V, 50 Hz generator built for the project. In order to obtain the 480V and 400V power also required, the customer supplied a 690 x 400/480V step-down power transformer that was mounted to the motor-generator set skid. Additionally, the customer supplied 25A and 50A receptacles that were mounted to the side of the control enclosure. In building this turn-key 50 Hz power source, the Horlick Company integrated all of the customer supplied components with their standard motor-generator set package.
The end result of the modifications was the creation of a very versatile frequency converter that can be used to create a variety of 50 Hz voltages. As can be seen from the photo, the 50 Hz power provided by the generator has been distributed to a number of receptacles mounted on the control panel. Through the easy operation of switches and contactors, the operator can have 400V, 480V or 690V, 50 Hz power present at the receptacles. From here, the customer simply connects a plug and cable that runs from the control panel to their equipment to be tested.
The customer's engineer in charge of the project said: "This was collaboration between the two of us and everything worked very well. Shawn Hennessey provided excellent technical and engineering support. We are quite satisfied with the both the motor-generator and the service that Horlick provide and we would be happy to work with them in the future."
