Honeywell's New Low-Global-Warming Solvent Cleared for Use by Key California Regulatory Agency

Solstice® Performance Fluid Effective Alternative to Current Solvent Being Phased Out

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that its new low-global-warming solvent, Solstice® Performance Fluid (PF), received a favorable designation from a key California regulatory agency.

California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), which maintains some of the highest standards for air quality in the U.S., has determined that Solstice PF is not a volatile organic compound (VOC) that will contribute to smog and granted the new solvent an exemption from its VOC regulations. Honeywell announced in September 2013 that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency granted Solstice PF an exemption from federal VOC regulations.

Solstice PF is being introduced as an effective, environmentally preferable alternative to HCFC-225, a common solvent in use today that is being phased out by regulation beginning January 1, 2015.

"This exemption further demonstrates that Solstice PF is a different kind of solvent - one that can balance environmental and cleaning performance," said David Cooper, global business director for Honeywell Fluorine Products. "Solstice PF helps solvent users meet both current and expected environmental requirements."

Solstice PF solvent can be used to clean oils, greases and other substances from metal and plastic parts used in many cleaning applications, including electronics and aerospace manufacturing. Solstice PF also helps solvent users comply with increasingly strict environmental requirements. It has a global warming potential (GWP) of 1, which is significantly lower than the GWPs of the most commonly used solvents today, including HCFC-225, HFC-4310mee and HFE-7100.

The solvent is nonflammable per ASTM E681 testing. It also has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 800 parts per million (ppm), which compares very favorably with 0.1 ppm for n-propyl bromide (nPB).*

In addition to Solstice PF, Honeywell's family of Solstice-branded products includes stationary and mobile refrigerants, liquid and gaseous blowing agents, and propellants based on Honeywell's new hydrofluoro-olefin technology, which helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance. The products have been developed and are being commercialized by Honeywell's Fluorine Products business, a leader in the manufacture and supply of environmentally preferable industrial solvents.
