Homasote® Achieves Field Rating of FIIC-46

440 SoundBarrier Proven Effective in Residential Floor/Ceiling Assembly

Homasote®, a leading manufacturer of quality building and industrial packaging products made from 98 percent recycled materials, announced the results of a field impact insulation class (FIIC) rating test conducted in March 2009 at the site of the Voorhees Town Center residential complex in Voorhees, New Jersey. The floor/ceiling system assembly featured one half inch of Homasote 440 SoundBarrier® and received a FIIC-46 rating, exceeding the most recent International Building Code (IBC) the requirements.

Conducted by Metropolitan Acoustics, the field test confirmed Homasote's claims that 440 SoundBarrier is an effective sound control board for multi-family residential applications. The test was conducted on a representative floor/ceiling assembly separating vertically adjacent master bathrooms of the Voorhees Town Center condominium units. As an impact source, Metropolitan used a Cesva model MI005 Tapping Machine to simulate and measure sound control effectiveness before residents moved into the units. Bathroom floors typically have the hardest tile surfaces and therefore were tested to ensure performance at this level of impact.

"Many sound control methods can test well in a laboratory setting," said Warren Flicker, CEO of Homasote. "But the fact that 440 SoundBarrier was proven effective in the field is a significant achievement."

Homasote 440 SoundBarrier also recently received low emitting certification from the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), allowing the product to be used for environmentally-conscious classroom construction where indoor air quality is a concern. The company's products have also earned the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, which recognizes Homasote's commitment to preventing deforestation. Homasote is also a national member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). These certifications further illustrate the company's dedication to green building practices and their commitment to validating Homasote products' performance.
