Holiday Inn Increases Meeting Space Bookings with MaxLite's Dimmable and Controllable LED Flat Panels

The hotel owner selected MaxLite’s panels not only because of their great performance, but also because of their ability to dim and adjust the rooms’ brightness with the use of the remote control. In fact, after installing the LED panels in the first room, the hotel owner asked me to come back and retrofit the other two meeting spaces because his customers only wanted to book the small room. Then once the meeting spaces were done, I was asked to come back a third time to retrofit some personal office spaces.” - Shane Hresko, CEO of Bmore Green (SDVOB)

The Challenges

After changing hotel ownership, the Holiday Inn on Washington Boulevard in Columbia, Maryland, was undergoing a significant renovation. When energy efficient lighting and solar panel installer Shane Hresko, CEO of Bmore Green, went to the hotel for a solar consultation in one of the meeting spaces, he suggested to General Manager Jack Warner that the hotel also make a switch to energy efficient lighting for these important spaces. Hresko brought samples of MaxLite’s LED Flat Panels with dimming capabilities, which impressed Warner and convinced him to make the switch.

The Solution

The Holiday Inn chose to start with a trial installation, replacing 12 260-watt fluorescent troffers with just 10 of MaxLite’s 45-watt Edge Lit LED Flat Panels in a warm 3000K correlated color temperate (CCT) in its smallest ballroom, the 780 square foot Continental Room. Hotel Owner Ankur Patel asked Warner to contact Hresko to retrofit the lighting in the other two meeting spaces, the Washington and International Ballrooms at 1,980 and 3,500 square feet, respectively. Between the two rooms, 56 265-watt fluorescent troffers were replaced with 52 45-watt Edge Lit LED Flat Panels. Additionally, once the meeting spaces were retrofitted, Patel and Warner chose to upgrade the lighting in three newly built managers’ offices, which just had six lights installed the week before with two 32-watt T8 fluorescent troffers in each office, with the Edge Lit LED Flat Panels. The LED products were purchased with $4,500 in utility rebates through Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE).

The Benefits MaxLite’s Edge Lit LED Flat Panels with dimming controlled through a portable remote control enable meeting space patrons to customize the lighting and layout of their room with ease. The owner explained that when giving tours of the three different meeting spaces, customers were only booking the small room because of the better quality lighting, the room’s ability to dim the lighting, and the adjustable position of the podium, which was made possible by offering a remote control for dimming in place of a wall-controlled unit. While the LED panels produced superior quality in the three meeting spaces, in the private office spaces in particular, the employees were impressed with the LED lighting fixtures’ ease on the eyes and reduction in headaches and eye fatigue. In the end, the hotel will save 764,200 kWh of energy, and $91,704 in energy in maintenance by switching from fluorescent to LED lighting.
