Precise New Holemaking Solutions Offer Faster Feedrates, Greater Range of Sizes, for More Machines

Ramsey, MN - December 22, 2004 - Command Tooling Systems has introduced five new solutions for drilling and boring holes in fewer passes, with chamfers, at faster feed rates, for a greater size range, on more machines.

A versatile new solution for combining drilling and chamfering into a single operation is being introduced by Command. Their new offering of solid carbide drills - in combination with a new chamfer collar collet chuck system - can be used instead of special step -drills in many applications from 5/32" to 3/4" (4mm to 20mm). This drill/chamfer combination was designed to perform at recommended drill parameters to the full depth of the hole. According to Steve Lovendahl, Product Manager, "Our coolant-through solid carbide drills feature drill point geometries and coatings that will provide the fastest drilling available on the market today."

The new chamfer collars fit onto Command's chamfer collar collet chucks, available for CT 40, CT 50, BT 30, 40, 50, HSK 63A and straight shanks. These collet chucks utilize standard DR (ER) style collets and are offered in three sizes (DR 20, 25, 32). XT precision collets and nuts can also be used if greater clamping forces are required. The chamfer collars feature adjustable insert cartridges that are indexable to chamfer at a 90 degree included angle. Collars are available in three sizes to fit the corresponding collet chucks. This chamfering collar / collet chuck assembly features a balanced design to G2.5 at 10,000 RPM.

For roughing in fewer passes, VersaMax(TM) twin boring heads now offer axial-stepped standard insert cartridges that allow the offset of inserts both radially and axially. As a result, the radial depth of cut per pass is increased to over the width of a single insert to remove more material per pass. Chips also break more easily due to increased chip load. VersaMax now makes it possible to more fully utilize a machine's power capability in roughing operations.

To rough and finish bore in a single pass, IntraMax(TM) bridge -type system with twin cutters is now available for a greater diameter range: from 2" up to 14". Simultaneous roughing and finishing yields significant cycle time reductions. These same components can be also be assembled to turn outside diameters.

To cut finish times by 50%, 5 degree finishing insert cartridges have been introduced so that MicroMax(TM), VersaMax(TM) and IntraMax(TM) fine boring heads can utilize wiper inserts. "With the wiper indexable insert geometry - originally developed for faster turning applications - we can double finish boring feed rates while maintaining surface finish quality", states Lovendahl.

Command has also introduced a line of straight shank quick change tooling to adapt to stationary applications with the Urma Beta Modul® connection. As a result, the same tooling used to improve productivity on milling machines can also b e used to improve productivity on turning machines. The complete line of Urma Modular Boring tools, from .228" up to 14" can now be applied to any straight shank machine adaption. Beta Modul quick-change straight shanks are currently available in Beta 32, 40, and 63 sizes and are compatible with other boring tool systems.
