Hillsborough County, Fla., Water Reclamation Facility Again Wins Annual Florida Water Environment Association Award

The facility has won the Earle B. Phelps Award three times in the past four years

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa.

The Hillsborough County, Fla., Water Resource Division Northwest Regional Water Reclamation Facility has again received the Florida Water Environment Association's Earle B. Phelps Award in the advanced wastewater treatment plant category. The facility also won the award in 2007 and 2008 and was the runner up in 2009.

The Earle B. Phelps Award, established in 1964, honors outstanding wastewater treatment plants in Florida that have maintained the highest removal of pollutants. Awards are given in three categories: advanced treatment; advanced secondary facilities; and secondary treatment facilities. Plant size also is considered, with nominees being evaluated against facilities of the same relative size and treatment type.

The 6.5-million-gallons-per-day Northwest Regional facility is one of six Hillsborough County advanced wastewater treatment plants. The regional wastewater facilities collect and treat 36- mgd of wastewater and distribute 21-mgd of reclaimed water to more than 15,000 residential and commercial accounts. Reclaimed water involves taking wastewater from treatment plants, treating it and making the resulting high quality water available to homes and businesses for beneficial uses such as watering plants and lawns. Reclaimed water is more cost efficient for customers to use and reduces the demand for potable water.

The Northwest Regional plant's deep bed filtration process, which economically removes total suspended solids from the wastewater system, is provided by the TETRA DeepBed(TM) tertiary filtration system from Severn Trent Services. Thirteen of the last 16 winners of the Phelps Award have utilized the TETRA wastewater technology for their filtration needs.
