Astec Multi-Module Switchers Get a Boost with up to 18 Outputs

Expanded VS Series Offers New Options for Maximum Flexibility

CARLSBAD, Calif. January 14, 2003 - Astec Power, a leading merchant supplier of power conversion solutions, has expanded its modular VS Series line of high-power switchers to include new six-slot cases with a total output up to 2500W. Using single- or three-phase AC input from 84V (single-phase) or 180V (three-phase) to 264VAC, the new models can be configured with as many as 18 different DC outputs ranging from 2V to 48V. The systems can contain up to six of Astec's proven VS series power factor controlled output modules in a case only 5.0" (12.7cm) high by 10.8" (27.4cm) wide by 11" (27.9cm) deep.

Designed to supply complex instrumentation and large industrial applications, the new VS4 (single-phase) and VS9 (three-phase) models enhance the flexibility of the VS Series by offering six configurable slots that can supply a total of 18 outputs with a DC voltage selection of 2V, 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 15V, 24V, 28V, 36V and 48V. Individual modules are available with power ratings of 300W, 600W, 750W, 900W, 1200W and 1500W in single-output voltages as well as 250W and 500W in multiple output configurations. The new units give customers the flexibility to support larger applications with the same reliable single-, dual- and triple-output DC modules used in the existing VS Series two-slot and four-slot cases.

All VS models comply with worldwide safety and performance standards from UL, CSA, VDE, TUV and CE. In addition, the units are certified to CISPR 22, EN55022 Level B for both conducted and radiated EMI filtering. Featuring active power factor correction, the VS Series also complies with EN61000-3-2 harmonic distortion standards and uses 30 percent less energy than supplies without PFC.

Other features include current sharing, remote sensing, overload protection, voltage adjustment, margining, and DC-OK signal and status indicator LED on all outputs, along with AC-OK and Global DC-OK signals each with two logics. The fan-cooled units are also available with a Fan Fail Option to avert thermal runaway. This option provides a TTL-level signal indicating if any fans within the modules have stopped operating. As an added enhancement to reliability, the three-phase units will continue to operate with loss of phase.

Evaluation units are available now. Because of the wide range of options, pricing varies starting at about $0.50 per Watt for a base configuration including a three-year warranty.
