High Capacitance Tantalum Capacitors have low profile design.

Press Release Summary:

With max case height of 2 mm, PulseCap(TM) capacitors are designed to boost transmitter power in reduced-height applications such as SSDs, PCMCIA/USB wireless express cards, and wireless pulse applications. They are available in 2 case sizes; 6 (14.5 x 7.5 x 2.0 mm) and 4 (7.3 x 6.1 x 2.0 mm), and are rated from 1,000-3,300 µF with voltage rating of 4-10 V. RoHS-compliant devices operate at -55 to +125°C and are capable of withstanding soldering profile of 3x reflow at 260°C.

AVX's Low Profile, High Capacitance PulseCap(TM) Tantalum Capacitors Boost Transmitter Power in Solid State Drives and Wireless Pulse Applications

PulseCap's undertab termination increases volumetric efficiency, delivers PCB space savings

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - AVX Corporation, a leading manufacturer of advanced passive components and connectors, has developed a new range of high capacitance PulseCap(TM) tantalum capacitors that feature a low profile. The PulseCap tantalum capacitors are designed for applications that require bulk capacitance to boost transmitter power, such as solid state drives (SSDs), PCMCIA/USB wireless express cards, smart meters, GPS transmitters and GSM high-speed wireless data handling.

Two case sizes of tantalum products are available; case sizes "6" (14.5 x 7.5 x 2.0mm) and "4" (7.3 x 6.1 x 2.0mm) are rated from 1000µF to 3300µF (3.3mF) with a voltage rating of 4V to 10V. A maximum case height of 2mm makes the PusleCap Series ideal for reduced-height applications. The 'undertab' termination style, where traditional 'J' leads are replaced by terminations that do not protrude outside of the outline of the case, increases volumetric efficiency and allows parts to be positioned closely together, delivering significant space savings.

PulseCap devices are RoHS compatible and capable of withstanding a soldering profile of 3x reflow at 260°C. Operating temperature range is -55°C to +125°C.

"PulseCap, our new addition to the AVX tantalum capacitor family, is answering demand for high capacitance devices in a wide range of upcoming applications. The fast wireless data handling in applications like GPS transmitters, GSM communications, smart meters, and energy backup for solid state discs in power disruption state are typical circuits that require capacitance between 1mF to 10mF for safe operation. In contrast to other large case size, large capacitance devices, PulseCaps are true surface mount devices capable of withstanding lead-free reflow process assembly. They also save more space on a PCB by offering superior capacitance and volumetric efficiency in low profile cases," said Dan Lane, marketing manager at AVX.

Pricing typically starts at $1.80 each and are available in volume with a typical lead time of 14 to 20 weeks.
