HID Global's New OMNIKEY® 5321 PAY Reader Receives EMVCo CL 2.0 Level 1 Type Approval Extending Cashless Payment Capabilities to Users

New reader enables cashless payment on Windows® operating systems while associated reader board provides fast-track opportunities to integrators developing cashless payment devices

IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 17, 2009 - HID Global, the trusted source for solutions for the delivery of secure identity, today announced that it received EMVCo CL 2.0 Level 1 type approval for its OMNIKEY® 5321 PAY USB Reader that is designed for contactless payment applications. The reader, which will be introduced at the CARTES & IDentification exhibition in Paris on November 17, 2009, joins the broad range of contactless solutions from HID Global that serve customers in Automatic Fare Collection (AFC), banking and contactless payment, loyalty programs and vending applications.

"We are proud that the reader is the first stand-alone desktop reader to be granted the EMVCo CL 2.0 Level 1 type approval," said Gunther Weller, senior product line manager, HID Global. "Additionally, we are the first company to offer a stand-alone desktop reader with PC/SC standard interface for easy access to integration partners. The reader board product enables market-leading integrators and terminal manufacturers using our technology to significantly reduce their effort and risk at the time of integration and achieve certification of their devices more easily, resulting in a higher level of flexibility for the integrator and their customers."

The EMVCo approval is based on requirements stated in the EMV Contactless 2.0 specifications designed by the members of EMVCo, including American Express, JCB, MasterCard and Visa. The reader meets all of the functionality required for interfacing with a contactless payment card and a SIM-sized, EMV-compliant contact card.

The OMNIKEY 5321 PAY desktop reader, as well as the OMNIKEY 5321 PAY reader board that has been developed for easy installation for integrators, both feature an enhanced antenna and special tuning and visual and audible signals as required by the EMV standard.

"The cashless payment market is evolving from magnetic stripe technology to contactless cashless payment," added Weller. "With the OMNIKEY 5321 PAY solutions, we are able to provide operators, terminal manufacturers and system integrators quick, easy and reliable ways to add contactless payment functionality to payment systems. It also enables them to take care of the evolving requests for converged solutions by combining closed and open payment standards together with ticketing or loyalty applications."

Specifically, the reader is a universal device that extends the functionality of customers' existing PC-based cashier systems. The solution connects via USB interface to systems running Windows® XP, Vista, CE or version 7, thanks to its WHQL-certified drivers and PC/SC standards-compliant interface.

"The EMVCo approval is one more indication of HID Global's expanding capabilities in the contactless payment world. Our experience in developing reader technologies provides HID Global with a unique advantage in the evolution of smart card technology," said Weller. "Our focus on accuracy, compatibility and technological innovation has made our readers and reader boards an attractive option for a variety of cashless payment applications."
