Helium Leak Testing, Inc. Certifies the World's Largest Single-Piece, Tantalum-Lined Column

Pressurized column contains corrosive chemicals that would create a hazard if released to the atmosphere

Northridge, CA. - May 9, 2007 - Helium Leak Testing, Inc. (HLT), a national provider of helium leak detection systems and services recently completed the leak free integrity of a ninety-foot long, five-foot diameter pressurized column for Titan Metal Fabricators, Camarillo, CA. The project was conducted at Titan's facility. The column, when delivered to the customer's chemical plant, will contain hot acid under pressure. Any leakage of the acid would create a hazard.

In this unique application, the column is the world's largest, single piece, carbon steel column. The requirement for the single piece construction was necessitated in order to provide a continuous surface for the interior 0.020" thick Tantalum coating. The coating forms a liner that protects the steel of the column from the corrosive effects of the high concentration & hot HCL acid. When operational, the column is pressurized to 175 psi. Without this protective lining, the acid would eat away the steel and the column would fail, leaking the acid.

For this application, HLT pressurized the column with helium and conducted extensive "sniff" tests on the exterior to detect any leakage. The leak tests are a part of the Titan quality assurance program to certify new products to the applicable requirements of ASME, PED, AD2000, Chinese SQL and TEMA standards. Selected because of its extensive experience in leak detection of tanks and closed vessels, HLT has supplied leak detection and other services to Titan for many years. Helium Leak Testing, Inc. provides many vacuum system and mass spectrometer leak detector field services including leak testing for tank, piping systems, pipelines and small electronic packages.

Titan Metal Fabricators designs and manufactures heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and related products for the steel, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. It specializes in products requiring acid-resistant materials such as Titanium, Zirconium, Niobium and Tantalum. It is the largest fabricator of Tantalum process equipment. Titan customers include General Electric, Dow Corning, Dow Chemical, Wooley, Parsons, and BP Chemical.

About Helium Leak Testing, Inc.

Founded in 1960, Helium Leak Testing, HLT, provides equipment sales and services nationally to multiple industries that require leak detection, test fixtures, production testing, leak standards, vacuum gauge calibration, vacuum pump maintenance. The company designs, builds and installs commercial and custom leak detection systems for applications in aerospace, automotive, oil, medical, food, semiconductors and power generation markets. HLT's Production Test Division provides outsourced testing and packaging of parts and components for OEMs in many of these same industries. The customized automated leak detector systems increase throughput and result in significant cost savings. The Services Division develops and implements solutions to industrial problems such as leaks, inadequate test fixture design, non-calibrated leak standards and vacuum gauges, inefficient vacuum pumping rates, all of which can cause production inefficiencies and potential measurement errors. The Services Division also develops procedures and trains production personnel in leak testing methods and techniques.
