New Heavy-Duty Splice Accommodates Railroad Signal Wire

HARRISBURG, Pa. - March 17, 2006 - Tyco Electronics recently introduced a heavy-duty electrical wire splice for railroad signal wire applications. The new in-line splice is suitable for 16-14 AWG railroad signal wire and accommodates the large wire insulation thickness often found in the rail industry. The splice is suitable for signal wires up to .250 inch thick.

The new splice is part of Tyco Electronics' PIDG line of insulated splices and is terminated with standard tooling. Crimping of the new 16-14 AWG heavy-duty splice is accomplished with PIDG splice crimp tooling in the 12-10 AWG dies. Often, railroad service work requires heavy-duty signal wire splicing and until now, an in-line splice capable of accepting the large insulation diameter of railroad signal wire was unavailable. This new product helps installers avoid improperly modifying wire to fit into smaller splicing products. Additionally, this product allows for one-step installation and does not require new or special tooling.

Railroad operators, rapid transit authorities and railway contractors in the Northeast United States are currently using this product. This splice has additional applications where wire insulation diameters are thicker than usual. Thick insulation diameters are typically found in heavy-duty industrial electronics as well as some commercial applications.
