Aware Inc. Introduces AccuRad ImageShare(TM) Platform at RSNA 2009

Aware's client/server software platform enables standards-based cross-enterprise medical image data sharing for health information exchange systems

BEDFORD, Mass., Nov. 19 -- Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ: AWRE), a global provider of imaging and biometrics software, today announced it will showcase its new AccuRad ImageShare Platform, a standards-based cross-enterprise image sharing platform for health information exchange (HIE), at the RSNA 2009 Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting. Aware will also participate in the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE®) Image Sharing Demonstration at RSNA, demonstrating use of AccuRad ImageShare Platform to retrieve and display medical imagery from other standards-based systems. RSNA is sponsored by the Radiological Society of North America and takes place in Chicago during the week of November 29.

AccuRad ImageShare Platform is a standards-based solution for fast and efficient compression, streaming, and viewing of medical images for cross-enterprise health information exchange systems. It achieves interoperability and performance by utilizing DICOM, WADO, the web services advantages of the IHE's XDS-I.b Profile, and the advanced features of JPEG2000 compression and JPIP streaming. AccuRad ImageShare Platform is comprised of AccuRad ImageShare Workstation and AccuRad ImageShare Server, which can each be used independently, or together as a comprehensive, turnkey client/server solution. It is built upon Aware's established AccuRad SDKs, including J2KSuite, and JPIPStream.

"Sharing of diagnostic imagery is a fundamental way to reduce the substantial costs associated with redundant patient scans," said Patricia Katzman, strategic marketing, medical software at Aware, Inc. "By leveraging new standards developed by the industry for this purpose, AccuRad ImageShare Platform enables interoperable yet secure exchange and viewing of historical image records between enterprises without sacrificing speed or viewing features."

An electronic health record (EHR) is incomplete without diagnostic images. Imagery from prior exams provides historic and baseline information that is valuable to healthcare providers in formulating a diagnosis and monitoring the condition of the patient. When they do not have access to prior scans, they often order rescans, which wastes money and resources.

Fast, ubiquitous access to medical images through an EHR system connected to an HIE enables convenient usage of healthcare information collected outside the boundaries of the healthcare enterprise. The AccuRad ImageShare Platform offers a new solution that leverages Aware's standards-based JPEG2000 compression and JPIP streaming technology to enable users in constrained networks across multiple enterprises fast access to diagnostic quality images.
