Headwall Photonics Wins Prestigious 2012 R&D 100 Award for Its Hyperspec RECON Sensor

Handheld, rugged hyperspectral sensor recognized as one of the world's most technologically significant products

Fitchburg, MA - R&D Magazine has just announced that the Hyperspec® RECON(TM) hyperspectral sensor has been chosen as a recipient of a 2012 R&D 100 Award. The annual award competition is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. An independent judging panel along with editors of R&D Magazine chose the top 100 products; results were made public today.

"We are extremely proud to win this very prestigious award," said David Bannon, CEO of Headwall Photonics. "The core technologies that differentiated Hyperspec RECON in the eyes of the judging panel--very high spatial and spectral resolution and high-efficiency diffractive optics--are fundamental to all our hyperspectral sensors."

Rita Peters, Editorial Director for R&D Magazine, notified Headwall Photonics that its Hyperspec RECON sensor was chosen as one of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced in the past year. "On behalf of the R&D staff, I would like to congratulate the project team on the design, development, testing, and production of this remarkable product."

Formal presentation and acceptance of the award will take place November 1, 2012 in Orlando.

About Hyperspec RECON

Hyperspec RECON is a rugged and portable hyperspectral imaging sensor designed to provide discrete target identification of a 6" x 6" scene at a distance of up to a mile. The sensor, which operates in the VNIR spectral range of 380nm-1000nm, was developed to quickly and accurately detect and classify materials within the field of view based on specific spectral signatures. Hyperspec RECON was developed for the U.S. Army and can be deployed as a handheld unit or mounted on a vehicle or mast.

Hyperspec RECON uses aberration-corrected diffractive optics to assure a very wide field of view and that spectral and spatial resolution are maximized. Spectral signatures are loaded onto an SD card, meaning that Hyperspec RECON can be tailored to render hyperspectral scenes with a high degree of discrimination and customization.

Application areas for Hyperspec RECON include military/defense, homeland security, border patrol, base security, and remote sensing and analysis.
