Headers support pin-in-paste soldering processes.

Press Release Summary:

Minitek(TM) 2 mm headers feature high-temperature plastic molded housings with design optimized for solder paste flow. Standoffs raise housing body above board surface to provide clearance for paste to be deposited and allow molten paste to flow freely from printed position into board through-hole and around each pin. Options include shrouded and unshrouded headers in straight, right-angle, or stacking versions to support custom board spacing.

FCI Minitek(TM) 2mm Headers Now Adapted for Pin-in-Paste Processing

ETTERS, PA. (March 6, 2007) - FCI, a leading supplier of connectors and interconnect systems, has extended its range of connectors compatible with Pin-in-Paste (PiP) soldering processes with the introduction of new Minitek(TM) 2mm headers specifically adapted for PiP soldering. Available options include shrouded and unshrouded headers in straight, right-angle or stacking ("railroad track") versions to support custom board spacing. These new connectors are ideal for industrial applications such as process control units, payment terminals, and control boards.

"Pin-in-Paste processing technology enables through-mount components to be soldered using conventional reflow soldering processes and can eliminate the need for a separate wave soldering operation in the process flow," said David Sideck, Regional Market Manager, FCI. "This processing technique is particularly attractive for connectors because the mechanical strength of through-mount soldered leads is maintained even as the applied cost savings are realized."

The molded housings for Minitek PiP headers are made of a high temperature plastic with a design optimized for solder paste flow. Standoffs raise the housing body slightly above the board surface to provide clearance for adequate solder paste to be deposited and to allow the molten solder paste to flow freely from its printed position into the board through-hole and around each pin. Pin lengths are reduced in order to avoid the risk of pushing solder paste out of the holes during connector placement. FCI has extensively tested the Minitek PiP connectors and offers full application support including stencil design, paste application and board layout.

The Minitek 2mm modular board-to-board and cable/wire-to-board interconnect system is part of the popular Basics+® program, which delivers outstanding service on popular standard connectors. It is extensively supported via the hot line (basics.help@fciconnect.com) and the dedicated microsite www.fciconnect.com/basics where product drawings, test reports, application notes and much more are readily available.

Pricing for Minitek Pin-in-Paste headers ranges from $.025 to $.045 per pin.
