Harris Stratex Networks Introduces Advanced Carrier-Grade Gigabit Ethernet Transport Feature Enhancements

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., April 3 - Harris Stratex Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:HSTX), the leading independent supplier of turnkey wireless network solutions, today announced the availability of two major enhancements to its gigabit Ethernet transport features for the Eclipse(TM) wireless transmission platform.

Physical Port Link Aggregation provides very-high-speed virtual Ethernet circuits, designed to provide higher throughput and greater path resiliency, a breakthrough for many operators planning to deploy new, bandwidth-hungry services. The second innovation, Resilient Wireless Packet Ring(TM) (RWPR) protocol, provides redundancy in Ethernet mesh and ring topologies, using Rapid Failure Detection to significantly reduce convergence times to 50 milliseconds or less.

These two new features support resilient, high-speed wireless Ethernet while providing recovery convergence times that dramatically exceed standard Ethernet protection mechanisms. These enhancements enable operators to evolve their networks and service offerings quickly and economically. Eclipse now provides the ideal solution for operators of current TDM mobile backhaul networks planning to deploy new technologies such as HSPA. Eclipse's carrier-grade Ethernet transport supports native transport of carrier-grade Ethernet data and TDM traffic, enabling smooth network evolution to the packet-based architecture required to deliver scalability, flexibility and cost effectiveness in the future.

"These new enhancements extend Eclipse's leadership as the most advanced Gigabit wireless Ethernet transport solution on the market today," said Guy Campbell, president and chief executive officer of Harris Stratex Networks. "Eclipse now delivers unmatched carrier-grade features that, given the evolution of next-generation mobile networks, will be in high demand by operators seeking to transform their networks and offer new revenue-generating services."

Unlike solutions that rely on expensive external Gigabit Ethernet switches, Eclipse now supports physical port link aggregation to present a single Gigabit Ethernet customer interface with a throughput of up to 900 Mbps or greater. Link aggregation enables multiple independent radio paths to appear as a single high-capacity virtual Ethernet circuit. If one path fails, high priority traffic can then be routed over one of the remaining paths. In this way, very-high-speed Ethernet links can be configured for a high degree of resilience without the need for equipment redundancy, such as hot standby protection, saving operators significant capital costs.

Eclipse's new patent-pending Resilient Wireless Packet Ring(TM) (RWPR) protocol provides redundancy in Ethernet mesh and ring topologies, using Rapid Failure Detection to significantly reduce convergence times to 50 milliseconds or less-over 20 times faster than the alternative provided by the Rapid Spanning Tree protocol (RSTP).

With these two new features of link aggregation and RWPR, Eclipse can support high-speed-750 Mbps and beyond-mesh and ring network architectures with carrier-grade convergence times. In addition, Eclipse can reduce bandwidth requirements through the use of cross-polarization interference cancellation (XPIC) and mixed traffic support, which enables operators to transport E1/DS1 and STM1/OC3 TDM traffic side by side with native Ethernet data.
