Cavium Networks Unveils World's Fastest FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certified Hardware Security Modules for Government, Healthcare & Financial Applications

New NITROX XL PCI-Express Gen2 Adapter Family with optional Gigabit Ethernet interfaces delivers greater than 5 times the performance over existing solutions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, storage and video applications, today announced the NITROX XL CN16XX-NFBE Adapter family, the world's fastest FIPS 140-2 level 2 and 3 certified Hardware Security Module (HSM) with PCI-Express Gen2 connectivity in a low profile form factor and integrated Network Interface Card (NIC) functionality. The new NITROX XL NFBE family offers up to 45,000 RSA operations per second and 5 Gbps performance and is certified to the stringent US government security standards.

This product family delivers an unmatched solution to the increasing performance, cryptographic and time to market requirements of the financial, government and healthcare vertical markets. The NITROX XL adapters are being integrated into a wide range of equipment including Remote Access Servers, Public Key Infrastructure, Database Servers, Web Servers, L4+ Switches, Load Balancers, Networking/Server Appliances and Unified Threat Management Appliances

HSMs are physical devices with a tamper-resistant enclosure that traditionally come in the form of a plug-in card or an external security device that can be attached directly to the appliance, server or general purpose computer. HSMs provide both logical and physical protection of secure keys from non-authorized use and potential adversaries and are widely used in the industry for managing digital keys, accelerating digital signings/second and for providing strong authentication to access critical keys for server applications. Achieving FIPS 140-2 level 2 and 3 certification requires significant expertise and time, and OEMs leverage pre-certified HSMs to significantly reduce research and development cost and increase time-to-market of their systems.

Two key trends in the networking marketplace are driving the need for high performance and low power/profile HSMs. First, network encryption performance requirements have grown significantly due to the increased adoption of encryption and the rapid increase in data theft and security breaches across the Enterprise and cloud-enabled Data Centers. Second, power and space requirements are becoming constrained, driving the need for low power/profile highly integrated Adapters. Solutions available in the marketplace today fall short in addressing the performance, power and form factor requirements of next generation networking/IT infrastructure equipment. The NITROX XL CN16XX-NFBE Adapter family delivers market leading performance for both symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic operations, low power dissipation and low profile form factor with integrated NIC and PCI Express Gen2. The NITROX XL NFBE family is offered to customers as production-ready Adapters with extensive software support.

"Cavium is known for its innovation as part of its market leading security and multi-core processor products. We are extending this innovation and market leadership to the HSM Adapter market with our NITROX XL NFBE product family," said Rajneesh Gaur, Sr. Director, Networking and Communications at Cavium Networks. "We developed this product line in close partnership with several major OEMs, who have been extremely pleased with its features and performance, and are using it for a broad range of higher volume applications."

NITROX XL CN16XX-NFBE Adapter Family
Cavium Networks NITROX XL NFBE FIPS 140-2 level 2 and 3 adapters perform all asymmetric and symmetric key management within the tamper proof enclosure. The functions include secure user login/authentication, user-authorized key creation/deletion, on-card key storage, and secure off-card key archiving/sharing.

In addition to typical FIPS HSM functionality, the NITROX XL CN16XX NFBE also supports an option for two ports of Gigabit Ethernet, adding NIC functionality to the HSM adapter. The PCIe Gen2 adapter also supports a USB interface used for a Level 3 solution. The NITROX XL CN16XX-NFBE adapter family is a future-proof design that can be upgraded to the FIPS140-3 specification, and ECC for digital signing with a firmware update. This family is offered in multiple SKUs spanning in performance from 7,000 RSA Ops/sec and < 1 Gbps to 45,000 RSA Ops/Sec and 5 Gbps.

The NITROX XL CN16XX-NFBE Software Support
Cavium Networks provides a comprehensive Software Development Kit that includes C-source code for Linux and FreeBSD drivers. The SDK also includes APIs for OpenSSL, OpenSSH and PKCS#11, key management utilities, test utilities and reference code for easy portability. The Crypto-API's are common between Cavium's FIPS and the non-FIPS product providing customers with tremendous R&D leverage and re-use.

Pricing and Availability
The CN16XX NFBE FIPS HSM family of adapters is currently under NIST standards-body certification and prototypes are available now. The production volumes will be available by end of Q4 2009. Pricing is available on request.
