Overview

The IBM 7204 External Disk Drive Model 573 is designed to be a low-cost alternative to other externally attached disk storage devices available for the IBM eserver pSeries(TM) and RS/6000® families of workstations and servers. The IBM 7204 Models 518, 536, and 5763 use a redesigned and improved disk assembly, designed for greater reliability and improved performance. They use a low voltage differential or single-ended (LVD/SE) interface.

The new Model 573 External Disk Drives have a formatted capacity of 73 GB. This increased data capacity over Models 518 and 536 allows you to add new applications, and expand the number and size of data files readily accessible to you. The increased capacity, the average typical seek time of 4.7 milliseconds read and 5.3 milliseconds write, combined with a maximum media data transfer rate of 66.0 MB per second, make this 7204 External Disk Drive Model 573 a very competitive storage solution for pSeries and RS/6000 users.

Key Prerequisites

AIX® Version 4.3.0, 5.1.0, or later

Planned availability date

August 15, 2003

Description

The 7204 Model 573 uses a 68-pin, low voltage differential or single-ended (LVD/SE) interface and attaches to the host pSeries and RS/6000 servers via SCSI cable to a variety of SCSI-2 single-ended (SE) Fast/Wide adapters. The number of SCSI devices that can be attached to each SCSI controller varies based on the type of SCSI controller, running AIX Version 4.3.0, 5.1, or later, allowing multiple 7204 devices to be installed per system. More information on cabling is located in the Hardware requirements section.

Product positioning

The IBM 7204 Model 573 is an alternative to other externally attached disk storage devices available for attachment to the pSeries and RS/6000 families of workstations and servers.

The 7204 Model 573 uses the LVD/SE SCSI interface. The increased capacity makes the 7204 Model 573 an attractive product that allows you to increase the amount of data storage beyond that offered by previous IBM 7204 models and internal host system disk storage.

For Serial Storage Architecture (SSA), the IBM 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem should be considered.
