Fujitsu Introduces World's First 2.5 7,200 RPM 3.0 Gb/s Serial ATA Hard Disk Drive

Tokyo, Japan, Mar. 06, 2007 - Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of the new MHW2 BJ series of world's first[1] 7,200 rpm 2.5" hard disk drives (HDDs) with a serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s interface[2]. Featuring the world's highest storage capacity of 160 GB[3] for a 7,200 rpm 2.5" HDD, the new series is targeted primarily at high-performance notebook PCs. The new series will be available on global basis at the end of May, 2007.

In addition to achieving the world's leading storage capacity, MHW2160BJ is capable of data transmission speeds at up to 300 MB/s, the fastest rate in the industry. The series also features best-in-class acoustic noise level of 2.5 bels[4] at idle, and low-power consumption, operating at 2.3 watts or less when reading or writing data.

As the use of notebook PCs becomes even more popular, there is demand for high reliability notebook PC HDDs that offer high-speed and high-capacity performance on par with those used in desktops. The MHW2 BJ series meets this demand with a speed of 7,200 rpm, the highest of any serial ATA 2.5" HDD. These HDDs boast the high quality Fujitsu customers come to expect, and they can be easily incorporated into high-performance notebook PCs and flat panel desktop PCs, both of which are expected to gain popularity. They are also RoHS[5] compliant.

Sales Targets: 1.6 million units total in fiscal 2007

[1] World's First: Source from Fujitsu Limited, as of March 6.

[2] Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s Interface: The Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) interface is a standard ATA for connecting a computer to a hard disk drive or other storage device. Each device is connected individually to the host with a single signal, and data is transmitted one bit at a time. Therefore, high-speed data transfer without interference or noise is possible. This interface is also capable of handling even faster data transfers. The SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface is an expanded version of the original SATA 1.5 Gb/s interface and, due to the encoding scheme, equivalent to an actual data transfer speed of 2.4 Gb/s (300 MB/s).

[3] Storage capacity of 160 GB: 160 GB is MHW2160BJ's storage capacity. 1 gigabyte is equivalent to 1,000,000,000 bytes. Usable storage capacity is actually less than this figure. Actual storage capacity may vary depending on the environment and formatting of the customer's system.

[4] Bel: A unit for indicating noise levels. 1 bel is equivalent to 10 decibels.

[5] Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment: A directive issued by the European Union on February 13, 2003 that has set legal regulations for hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to minimize risk to the environment and people in member countries. Based on the directive, as of July 1, 2006, the amount of lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, cadmium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) is regulated in electrical and electronic equipment intended for Europe.
