Grimsby, ON — Handling Specialty Manufacturing, manufacturer of custom engineered material handling equipment solutions, recently sold two four-post lifts – called Cargovators – to one of the world's leading manufacturers of industrial gas turbines toaid in the assembly and dis-assembly of turbine engines and gas compressors at one of their facilities in the U.S.
The client has bought and installed several Cargovators from Handling Specialty over the years, in various capacities and heights for their facilities throughout the United States and Europe. In the case of this client, the Cargovators are installed below the floor (pit mounted) allowing the client to present a perfect ergonomic working environment for their technicians, as well as expanded floor space asthe Cargovator is stored beneath the floor.
The Cargovator's design and functionality is well suited to tasks such as assembly of large turbines and many other heavy, complex products that require secure load handling, zero drift and maximum repeatability. Handling Specialty's engineering team has provided the following information on the features and benefits of the Cargovator four-post lift below:
Holding LoadÂ
Mechanical ball screws are designed to provide smooth lifting and maintain the position of the load in the raised position over extended periods of time without drifting. Hydraulic power units have a tendency to drift due to leakage of hydraulic fluid past cylinder seals or any seal throughout the hydraulic system. This situation becomes more troublesome as the unit is used over a period of time.
Clean Environment
Mechanical ball screws are designed to operate in a clean environment; hydraulic systems may develop leaks throughout the hydraulic system. Hydraulic hoses and fittings under pressure flex and then develop leaks of oil making the area messy; the more flexing due to operating the system increases the potential of leaking seals.
Less Maintenance
Mechanical ball screws require less maintenance. Hydraulic systems require more maintenance and down time due to replacement of cylinder seals and pump components, which can be expensive. The repeatability of ball screws requireless maintenance, less downtime and perform much better.
Longer Life Cycle
Mechanical ball screws have a much higher life cycle. Based on the operation of repeatedly indexing the load and holding the position for extended periods of time, ball screws are better suited to this application.
Constant SpeedÂ
Ball screws provide a constant speed regardless of the load. Hydraulic systems travel speeds increase and decrease based on the load being lifted or lowered, making adjustments more difficult and inconsistent.
Four Post Support
The ball screw system supports the deck by four (4) screws on each corner of the deck rather than one or two points where decks or tabletops can deflect under load. The mechanical lift ensures the deck is properly supported providing years of uniform repeatable lifting and positioning.
