Handheld Optical Variable Attenuator Conducts On-line Attenuation

Toronto, Canada - GAO Comm (www.GAOComm.com) has announced the release of handheld optical variable attenuator which is used with single-mode fiber for continuously variable optical signal attenuation. Featuring a rugged design, portability and ease of use, the attenuator is widely used in fiber link certification, routine maintenance and in lab environments. It is ideal for telecom and CATV maintenance, comprehensive cable construction systems, optical instruments research and development and optical communication training.

This handheld optical variable attenuator, model C0270001, features on line stepwise attenuation in 0.05 dB steps, low battery indication, and an auto-off function . This optical variable attenuator combines the functions of both an attenuator and an optical power meter and allows users to set the output power level directly thus improving the overall testing efficiency. It shows both absolute and relative attenuation value and simultaneously displays wavelength, input power, output power, current attenuation and selected step size.

The attenuator can be used in digital system communication devices such as PHD and SDH and also in analog modulation CATV systems. It works with typical 9/125 single mode fibers and offers FC and PC interchangeable connectors for selection. The attenuator provides an attenuating wavelength range from 1260 to 1650 nm at an accuracy of ±0.8 dB and a wide measurement range from 2.5 to 65 dB. Calibrated wavelengths are 1310, 1490, 1550 and 1625 nm. Moreover, it memorizes the attenuating value and step on shut down and restores the values on next power up.

This handheld optical variable attenuator belongs to GAO's family of Fiber Optic Instruments. Lots of essential tools for fiber networks are available including Handheld Laser Source which provides a stable laser signal at various wavelengths and also features high stability in output power, Compact Fiber Optic Identifier which provides transmission direction, multiple signal frequencies identification and detachable InGaAs detector, and Handheld Visible Laser Source which uses visible red light to locate fiber faults from a macro bend point, break, problem coupler or connector or a mechanical splice that is not well aligned
