Symbol Technologies Introduces New Rugged Handheld Computer for Enterprise Mobility Systems

Symbol MC3000 Mobile Computer Delivers Exceptional Performance in a Highly Ergonomic Design

New Device Will Be On Display at National Retail Federation Show in New York City

Holtsville, N.Y. - January 12, 2005 - Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), the Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), today introduced a new enterprise mobility tool targeted at the retail and transportation and logistics industries. The new Symbol MC3000 handheld is a small, lightweight, highly ergonomic, rugged mobile computer, designed for businesses seeking to increase productivity and flexibility from in-store and backroom data capture applications. The new MC3000 handheld is based on the latest Intel® XScale® processor with intuitive Microsoft® Windows® CE .NET computing platform.

The new MC3000 handheld will be shown at the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 94th Annual Convention & Expo, which is being held from January 16-19 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City (Booth #1901).

MC3000- Built for the Mobile Enterprise

The MC3000's highly ergonomic design and feature set, combined with Symbol's global service and support capabilities and mobility management software, make the MC3000 a reliable, cost-effective solution for the retail worker who performs tasks such as inventory replenishment, price audits, warehouse shipping/receiving and other scan-intensive applications. The MC3000 device can also be used to increase the productivity of workers who require a secure, rugged device in the transportation and logistics, postal and other industries.

"Symbol designed the MC3000 to be lighter, more compact and more versatile than comparable rugged devices currently in the market, as these factors directly impact the overall performance and productivity of the user," said Chester "Chet" Pribonic, vice president and general manager of mobile computing, Symbol Technologies. "The MC3000 handheld provides a cost-effective enterprise mobility solution that will enable retailers, as well as those in industries like transportation and logistics, to increase workforce satisfaction, protect their investments and build greater competitive advantage."

The MC3000 handheld features are designed to support enterprise mobility strategies and include:

o Advanced scanning and imaging technologies to quickly, accurately and efficiently capture mission-critical information in both batch and WLAN configurations;

o Adjustable rotating scan turret with left, right and front positions to allow the user to adjust the scanning positions for increased comfort and productivity;

o Crisp and clear resolution display for easier and more comfortable viewing;

o Integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b and 802.11g) connectivity to effectively move the captured information; and

o Support for Symbol's Mobility Services Platform (MSP) agent, enabling corporations to monitor and manage the handhelds in real-time via a centralized Symbol MSP console.

A Migration Path

As customers seek to upgrade aging systems in order to support competitive business initiatives, the MC3000 provides them with a migration path to move from a legacy DOS-based application environment to the more intuitive and familiar user-interface of the adaptable Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.2 computing platform. "While the installed base of legacy DOS devices remains considerable today, by 2008, most DOS devices will be migrated over to newer and more functional OS platforms such as Windows CE .Net," says David Krebs, Mobile & Wireless Practice Director at Venture Development Corp.

Symbol has partnered with development tool providers, including IBM, MCL Technologies, Odyssey Software, and Wavelink, to simplify the migration of retailers' current DOS-based solutions to the more flexible Windows CE environment. Numerous application providers such as Agilysys, Creative Concepts Software and SofTechnics, will use the Symbol MC3000 to demonstrate mobile price and inventory management solutions, emulation systems, point of sale and other store systems at NRF.

"We have committed our industry and technical experience to delivering affordable mobile price and inventory management solutions for the retail industry," said Guy Dille, Global Business Unit Leader, Retail Software & Integration for SofTechnics, a Mettler-Toledo company. "Our GeM2020® suite, bundled with Symbol's new MC3000 handheld, puts affordable wireless technology in reach of all retailers regardless of their size. The integration of application software, hardware and services provides increased productivity and allows store associates to spend more time with the customer."
