Ground-Breaking for Eco-Friendly Power Plant Malzenice in Slovakia

In the presence of Lubomir Jahnatek, the Slovakian Minister of Economics, the ground-breaking ceremony was held today for the Malzenice combined cycle power plant in Slovakia. Malzenice is located in Trnava, a region with highly dynamic economic development. Siemens Energy is erecting the natural-gas-fired plant for E.ON as a turnkey project. The installed gross capacity of 430 megawatts (MW) will be sufficient to supply approximately 600,000 households with eco-friendly electricity. The power plant is scheduled to come on line in 2010.

"This plant will feature gas turbine technology that not only has a proven track record worldwide but that has also practically become a tradition in the partnership between E.ON and Siemens," said Rainer Hauenschild, CEO of the Energy Solutions Business Unit of Siemens Energy. "The power plant's efficiency of approximately 58 percent is today a top world ranking. This plant will thus make an important contribution toward reliable, cost-effective and eco-friendly power supply in Slovakia," commented Hauenschild.

The new SCC5-4000F 1 S power plant is a single-shaft configuration, in which the main components - gas turbine, steam turbine and generator - are arranged on a single line of shafting. By virtue of its modular design the plant can not only be readily adapted to meet specific customer and site requirements. It also enables high operating flexibility, short startup and fast load cycling. "Since development of the concept for Reference Power Plants in the middle of the nineties approximately 80 of these single-shaft plants have been sold worldwide. Most of them are in operation in Europe," added Hauenschild.

In addition to turnkey erection Siemens Energy will also supply an SGT5-4000F gas turbine, an SST5-5000 steam turbine, the generator, and the entire electrical and instrumentation & control equipment. Siemens Austria will provide support for execution of the civil works.

Combined cycle power plants are part of the Siemens environmental portfolio with which the company earned revenues of nearly EUR19 billion in fiscal 2008, That is equivalent to about a quarter of Siemens total revenue and makes Siemens the world's leading provider of eco-friendly technology.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2008 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR22.6 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR33.4 billion and posted a profit of EUR1.4 billion. On September 30, 2008, the Energy Sector had a work force of approximately 83,500. Further information is available at: http://www.siemens.com/energy.
