Versatile New Grooving System Plunges and Turns in 2 Directions

Latrobe, PA (December 12, 2002) -- The versatile new Kennametal A4 turning and grooving system offers the ability to perform grooving and side turning in either direction as well as cutoff operations. The A4 system offers a unique insert holder that features a top guide rail that is locked by the clamp, a 120-degree bottom prism seating surface, and a long clamping area. The result is extremely stable clamping, making it possible to perform side turning at up to 0.016 inches per revolution, twice the feed rate of existing tools. A4 also provides economical double-edged inserts that can be used for grooving at depths up to five times the groove width, sufficient to handle 80% of all grooving operations.

The A4's exclusive top guide rail ensures exceptional lateral stability that provides the tool with its extraordinary versatility. As a result, the A4 can handle turning, facing, grooving, face grooving, outside diameter and inside diameter applications, and cutoff operations. It can replace multiple tools including grooving, cutoff tools, and right- and left-hand diamond profiling tools. This means it can eliminate turret-indexing time, reduce tooling costs, simplify machine operation, and reduce insert inventory. The A4 cutting system excels in applications that require both plunging and side turning, such as machining a shaft with shoulders on both ends. The new clamping system also reduces insert deflection which helps improve cutting accuracy.

The new A4 tooling is offered in 3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm groove widths and is available as square shank grooving/turning tools for outside diameter operations, boring bar type grooving tools for inside diameter operations, and modular blades that fit both KM and square shank quick-change tooling systems. Inserts offered for full-radius and square-bottom grooving and cutoff. The new line includes two different chip control geometries. The GMN provides a neutral rake angle and is recommended for cutting cast iron and steel. The GMP offers a positive rake angle and is designed for stainless steel, aluminum and other non-ferrous alloys, and high temperature alloys. GMP style inserts are available in molded and ground styles. The ground inserts have a light hone that provides freer cutting on soft, gummy materials.

Inserts for A4 tooling are available in four different grades. KT315 is a multilayered TiN/TiCN/TiN-coated cermet grade for excellent surface finish and exceptional tool life. KC5010 is a TiAlN-coated, fine-grain carbide with high wear resistance. KC5025 is a TiAlN-coated, fine-grain carbide with an outstanding combination of wear resistance and toughness. KC5025 is the best choice for general machining of most materials. K313 is an uncoated, fine-grain carbide with excellent edge stability for applications where uncoated grades are preferred.
