The Automotive Industry Benefits From Samputensili's New Generating Grinding Machine S 250 G

At EMO 2005, the trade fair for machine tools, production systems and technologies taking place in Hanover this year, Samputensili is presenting this new compact high-capacity machine - guaranteeing gear manufacturers top levels of productivity (above all in the automobile sector).

Bologna, 26th September 2005 - Samputensili, one of the leading companies in the gear-cutting machine and tool industry, is presenting the new S 250 G generating grinding machine at EMO 2005 in Hanover, the trade fair for the entire mechanical engineering sector.

This machine, the first model in a new range, has been developed to achieve ever shorter cycle times. The S 250 G vertical generating grinding machine is the result of active cooperation between the Italian and German research, development and design departments of Samputensili. They have understood how to implement the requirements of the market to optimum effect by combining the strength and stability characterizing hobbing machines with the precision and flexibility of grinding machines.

The new S 250 G vertical generating grinding machine has been designed to offer the highest possible levels of productivity, something that also applies to the selection of tools that can be used. Thanks to its unusually compact dimensions this machine is suitable for virtually any production environment. The S 250 G is equipped with features such as a machine bed made of cast iron, as already successfully used for the construction of hobbing machines by the company's German branch, Samputensili Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH. It also includes innovative solutions and the best quality components the market has to offer. This applies above all to the "heart" of the machine, the subassembly carrying the grinding spindle. The light metal subassembly runs on anti-friction guideways, shifting is performed by a ballscrew spindle. Absolute precision of movement is ensured by the subassembly, which consists of the spindle with electric drive, absolute position encoder and tailstock. The spindle, which offers an output of 48 kW and a maximum speed of 20,000 rpm, can be equipped with temperature sensors and position measuring systems for real-time control of its function to permit adjustments as necessary. Synchronization between the tool and workpiece is ensured by the Siemens CNC control system as well as a magnetic encoder with resolution in the thousandths. In addition, the stream of coolant is constantly adjusted to the tool diameter and perfectly aligned to the point of contact between the tool and workpiece, which varies depending on the wear of the tool.

One of the major benefits of the new Samputensili S 250 G generating grinding machine is its automation system. The machine is equipped with a modular gantry loader. This allows the S 250 G to be directly incorporated in existing production lines. As no other devices are required for handling of the workpieces, users can make considerable cost savings here, purchasing a machine that is ready for use immediately.

To reduce the ancillary and auxiliary process times of the machine to a minimum centering (stock division) takes places outside the work area before the workpieces are positioned on the workpiece spindle and while grinding is taking place on the machine. This means only minimal adjustment of the workpieces on the workpiece spindle is then required - representing an enormous time saving.

The loader is designed to ensure fast and safe workpiece changing. While grinding is underway, the gantry loader "waits" outside the machine - constantly ready to insert the next workpiece or remove the completed item. The gantry loader is thus protected from soiling with oil and swarf during grinding, thus greatly increasing the reliability of the automation system in the long term.

Samputensili is a company that is characterized by continuous research in the technology sector, both in terms of products and processes, in line with the further developments in the branch and the reference market. The constant contact between its own technical departments and those of its customers enables the company to remain in touch with the actual requirements of customers and to provide customized and efficient solutions. Every year the corporate group from Emilia Romagna invests a large part of its turnover in product and process innovation. In 2004 SAMPUTENSILI spent a staggering 5.4 million euros on product and process innovation. For 2005 the company is planning investments amounting to 9.1 million euros. In the next three years (2005-2007) Samputensili plans to invest some 8% of turnover each year in process and product innovation and in R&D.

The machine type S 250 G has been developed to cater for the requirements of mass production in terms of quality and cycle times. When using ceramic grinding worms profiling and dressing can be carried out using diamond-plated master gears or a swiveling dressing unit with conventional dressing rollers. The first solution is probably the most productive and efficient solution currently available on the market. The dressing master gear reproduces the geometry of the gear with a high level of precision. This means work with the dressing master gear is simple and straightforward. Dressing is carried out by the standard generating movements of the grinding process. There is no need for additional software, complicated reprogramming or renewed adjustment prior to the dressing cycle. The diamond-coated dressing master gear is set up at a station outside the machine ready for work at all times and like the workpiece, is simply swiveled into the work area as required. The optional dressing roller unit however provides for a flexible response to demands made by smaller lots, rush orders and bottlenecks in the supply of tools to a machine.

Where tools are concerned, the Samputensili Group is supported by its strategic partner, Tyrolit GmbH. The experience gained by Tyrolit in the grinding and dressing tool sector allows the application technology can be perfectly tailored to customer requirements.
