Green Bay Packaging Buys New Core Cutters

Oct 2007

The Coated Products Operations of Green Bay Packaging Inc. will enhance core-cutting operations at five of its U.S. production facilities with the purchase of six new automated core-cutting machines from Appleton Manufacturing Division (AMD). Green Bay Packaging, a diversified manufacturer of paperboard packaging and pressure sensitive label stock, will employ the new AMD A301 core cutters at operations in Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Orlando. These facilities slit and distribute pressure sensitive label material as part of Green Bay Packaging's one-day customer service program.

According to Green Bay Packaging slitting supervisor Jeff Klima, the new core cutters will achieve several important quality goals in the production of pressure sensitive roll material. "AMD core cutters burnish core ends during cutting, eliminating unwanted core dust that can contaminate pressure sensitive stock during winding." Klima also noted, "The precision cut length of these units is outstanding - helping us produce a perfectly wound roll that runs flawlessly on our customer's converting machinery. We anticipate reducing our core waste, too."

At its facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Green Bay Packaging presently operates a fully automated Appleton Manufacturing P-510 core cutting system with autoloader that significantly enhances worker safety. Operators at this location never handle master cores; loading 3- and 6-inch diameter 10-foot cores into the autoloader hopper by forklift. With the P-510's programming capabilities, the cores are automatically cut to precise length as needed. "We've reduced our core scrap just a tremendous amount with this unit," said Klima.

The Coated Products Operations of Green Bay Packaging is a manufacturer of pressure-sensitive paper and films for a variety of labeling applications, including primary package decoration and variable information. Headquartered in Green Bay, Wis., Coated Products has three coating facilities located in Green Bay; Winchester, Va., and Mexico City. In addition, material is slit and distributed from five other locations in the United States and two in Canada.

Green Bay Packaging Inc. is a privately owned, diversified manufacturer of paperboard packaging. Founded in 1933, the company employs more than 3,000 people and consists of 30 divisions operating throughout North America.
