Graphic Packaging Now Offers MetalFX® as Low Cost Alternative to Metallic Inks and Foil Laminates

MARIETTA, Ga., Feb. 22 / -- Imagine that your product packaging appears to move or to change color on the store shelf as a consumer walks past.

That's just one of the unique ways that the MetalFX printing system can capture attention and boost sales -- and now Atlanta-based Graphic Packaging International has become the first flexo printer to become an accredited licensee in the United States for this unique technology developed by a British firm, MetalFX Technology Limited.

"Consumer goods companies are increasingly using metallized inks to upgrade the image of their products," says Ken Orze, manager of Graphic Packaging's plant in Wausau, Wisconsin. "The MetalFX process enables us to create an upscale, modern, metallic look while significantly reducing production costs."

MetalFX technology is based on CMYK inks being transparent. Using a flexographic press, a base of special MetalFX silver is applied to the product package, then CMYK inks are overprinted, which produces the effect of unlimited metallic colors.

"This process is an important new alternative to metallic inks and foil laminates," explains Orze. "It opens the door for product packaging line extensions that were previously cost prohibitive. In addition, we can add a metallic look to specific objects on the carton design -- such as a product photo or a company logo -- so they stand out, while still complementing the overall color palette and package design."

MetalFX includes two special features -- HoloFX(TM) which makes areas of a package seem to appear and disappear like a holograph, and LiteFX(TM) which creates the illusion of changing colors -- both of which can be achieved with a greater range of color hues than traditional metallic ink printing process.

"We can literally make product packaging shine in a very economical way," adds Orze.
