The art of growing plants and fish together has its historical roots with the Aztec Indians. Formal scientific interest of combining these two growing techniques began in the mid 1970's with the first large scale commercial aquaponics facility opening in the mid 1980's. The first home based aquaponics system was developed in the 1990's by refining the larger scale growing techniques into something more appropriate for smaller systems. This was the beginning of people fashioning their own systems to use at home.
