GPIO Expander Platform offers independent I/O voltages.

Press Release Summary:

Along with 400 kHz I²C interface, SX1501/SX1502/SX1503 offer 4, 8, or 16 I/O channels operating with VDD range of 1.2-5.5 V. They connect to low-core voltage chipsets in battery-powered handhelds, without requiring level translating circuits, and have 1 µA operating current. Each bi-directional I/O channel offers mask-programmable interrupts, programmable pull-up/-down, and push/pull outputs. Every 5 V-tolerant I/O output can sink 12 mA, and select channels can sink 24 mA max.

Semtech Introduces Industry's First 1.2V to 5.5V Low Voltage General Purpose I/O Expander Platform with Independent I/O Voltages

SX150X Family of Expanders Ideal for Low Power Handheld Devices

Camarillo, California - October 14, 2008
Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced the SX1501 platform of GPIO expanders that come in 4-, 8-, and 16-channels of I/Os operating with a VDD range of 1.2V to 5.5V. The devices connect easily to today's low core voltage chipsets in battery powered handheld applications without the need for level translating circuits.

Each channel of the true bi-directional style of I/O offers mask programmable interrupts, programmable pull-up/pull-down, and push/pull outputs. Every 5V tolerant I/O output is capable of sinking 12mA for LED blinking while a few of the channels on each device are capable of sinking up to 24mA. The SX1501/SX1502/SX1503 family of GPIO expanders is ideal for low core voltage applications such as cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, GPS units, and DSCs.

"To date, to use a competitor's GPIO expander in a 1.2V or 1.5V battery powered application, the customer will need to add additional level translating circuitry to interface to the GPIO expander. Our device connects directly with the core voltage minimizing cost and board-space" said Sameer Vuyyuru, Vice President of Marketing, Advanced Communications & Sensing. "Coupled with our LED control features, programmable logic functions, and multiple I/O rails, the SX1501 family addresses most of the GPIO expander needs in the market today in a small 3x3mm QFN package".

The SX1501/SX1502 are offered in 3mm x 3mm 20-QFN packages while the SX1503 is offered in a 4mm x 4mm 28-QFN package in the extended (-40°C to +85°C) temperature range. These devices will also be offered in 20-TSSOP and 28-TSSOP packages respectively.

KEY FEATURES OF THE SX1501 PRODUCT FAMILY
o Two independent 1.2V to 5.5V I/O voltages rails
o 400kHz I2C interface
o Programmable logic functions (PLD)
o Open drain active low interrupt output (NINT)
o Bit maskable
o Programmable edge sensitivity
o Hardware/software reset
o Operating current of only 1uA
