Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities | ADA 25th Anniversary
Heritage Printing Graphics in Charlotte NC Washington DC had the privilege of working with Google recently to have Heritage print and install ten portrait murals on the stairs at six different historic landmarks in Washington, DC. The celebration marks the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities works to accelerate the development of assistive technologies for people with disabilities. Its ADA campaign commemorated the 25th anniversary of the ADA through a series of art installations on prominent staircases throughout Washington, DC featuring a number of disability rights leaders, including:

On March 12, 1990, activists with disabilities abandoned their crutches and wheelchairs to pull themselves up the 83 stone steps at the Capitol Building and demanded passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. On July 26th, the bill was signed. For the 25th anniversary of the ADA, we're honoring leaders of the Disability Rights Movement, past and present, through portraits displayed on stairways across Washington D.C.
For decades people with disabilities fought and protested for equal access in the United States. Twenty-five years ago that effort culminated in the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights law that has improved the lives of millions of Americans and has served as a model for the Disability Rights movement around the globe.
On March 12, 1990, activists with disabilities pulled themselves up the 83 stone steps at the Capitol Building to demand equal rights. "The Capitol Crawl" symbolized the barriers confronting people with disabilities and helped propel the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. The bill passed on July 26, 1990.
For the 25th anniversary of the ADA, we celebrate the spirit and vigilance of the leaders of the Disability Rights Movement, both past and present.
