Globalstar Launches Satellite Data and Voice Module in the United States

Globalstar GSP-1720 module enables manufacturers, integrators and value added developers to integrate satellite connectivity into SCADA, telemetry and remote monitoring data solutions

MILPITAS, Calif., May 29 -- Globalstar USA, LLC, a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, governments, and individuals, announced today that it has started to deliver shipments of the new GSP-1720 satellite data and voice module (SDVM) manufactured by QUALCOMM Incorporated. Weighing approximately 60 grams, the SDVM is one-third the weight of the previous GSP-1620 modem board (SDM) and about half the size. The GSP-1720 offers integrators, OEMs, and value added developers a compact, power efficient and versatile wireless solution for those data applications, which require affordable low cost, 2-way satellite communications.

The GSP-1720 also integrates a number of new features including passive and powered antenna capability for installation flexibility, plus multiple port connectivity with both USB and serial connections. The GSP-1720 SDVM is also voice capable, which will provide developers with a broader opportunity by enabling them with the ability to integrate voice capability into their various satellite data solutions.

"Integrator customers have requested we offer voice capability with the GSP-1720 such that integrators could manufacture and offer data solutions that field personnel could remotely plug into, so they could make voice calls while on site, thereby decreasing their field repair and maintenance times," said Dennis Allen, Mr. Allen added, "The SDVM is ideally suited for those customers looking to economically send kilobytes and megabytes of data from areas beyond the reach of traditional wireless and terrestrial communications infrastructure. This product launch also demonstrates our commitment to continue to provide our customers with the latest in enhanced satellite data products and services."

Duplex (2-way) satellite data modems provide ideal solutions for a wide variety of customers looking for wireless data communications within and beyond the reach of traditional wireless and terrestrial infrastructure. Various utility, transportation, maritime, oil and gas, government, military, and environmental monitoring customers use Globalstar satellite modems for a variety of SCADA, telemetry, and monitoring applications as well as basic Internet and email access.

Globalstar will make available a range of antennas for the SDVM, designed for maritime installations as well as mobile and fixed land applications. The company is also developing an Integrator's Kit with the associated manuals, development and power cables, and software. Globalstar expects to launch the associated Integrator's Kit to developers and OEMs shortly.
