Portwell's New IEC60601-1 Compliant Medical LAN Card Lowers Cost and Simplifies System Design
FREMONT, CA. -- American Portwell Technology, Inc., (www.portwell.com), a wholly owned subsidiary of Portwell, Inc., a world-leading innovator in the Industrial PC (IPC) market and a Premier member of the Intel® Internet of Things (IoT) Solutions Alliance, has designed and created a new medical Ethernet isolation card that can be added to any computer with a PCIe slot. The new NIC-51010 is a Gigabyte PCIe network card that is IEC60601-1 compliant and features an isolated Ethernet 1000Base-T interface for medical applications. “We designed the new NIC-51010 LAN card with an IEC60601-1 compliant galvanic separation because that’s a key requirement in a doctor’s office, healthcare facility or hospital network when transmitting data between medical devices and systems through Ethernet to conventional IT equipment,” says Jack Lam, American Portwell’s senior program manager. Â
According to Lam, the key feature of Portwell’s new NIC-51010 medical LAN card is that it is designed to form a single bridge between medical and conventional equipment. It instantly eliminates the need for expensive medical LAN isolators that would normally have to be inserted between the traditional LAN ports and the medical device. “In this way,” Lam explains, “it lowers the total cost of providing galvanic isolation and simplifies the actual system design.” Â
Other features of Portwell’s new NIC-51010 medical LAN card include: RJ45 in/out networks isolator for galvanic isolation with dialectic strength of up to 4000 volts; one Gb/s Ethernet IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab PHY specifications compliance; IEEE 802.3az energy efficient Ethernet; IEEE 1588 precision clock synchronization; Jumbo frame support (9.6KB); Audio-Video Bridging (AVB) support (802.1Qav); two transmit and two receive queues; and TCP/UDP/IP stateless offload. Â
The new Portwell NIC-51010 medical LAN card solves a serious problem within medical safety zones. “All IT devices such as computers, printers, servers and the like that are connected together with Ethernet cables have a direct electrical connection with other IT devices within the network structure,” Lam explains. “Whenever computers or medical devices are connected to an Ethernet network, leakage currents can appear from over this datalink and this can be especially dangerous in the patient’s environment. Our new IEC60601-1 compliant NIC-51010 LAN card reduces this risk by isolating the connected device from these currents and voltages over the data line up to 4000 volts,” Lam confirms. Â
“What’s more,” Lam continues, “the NIC-51010 medical LAN card can be added to any computer with a PCIe x1 compatible card slot. To ensure ease of use, we include matching slot brackets for full-height or low-profile assembly, fitting in both 2U and 4U systems. With this card,” Lam adds, “our customers no longer need the expensive medical isolators that would otherwise have to be inserted between the LAN port and the medical device. This not only lowers costs, but also simplifies overall system design.
