Leviton's SmarkLock(TM) Takes Lead in Meeting New UL Standards for GFCI's

Little Neck, NY, June 20, 2002 - Leviton Manufacturing Company's SmartLock(TM) is the industry's first GFCI to meet UL's new listing requirements for GFCI's that go into effect January 1, 2003. The new requirements include: a diagnostic indication of line/load miswiring, greater surge immunity, improved criteria for corrosion-resistance and higher standards for false tripping from electrical power line "noise".

"Leviton has historically set the pace for safety in the wiring device industry and once again we've moved into high gear," said Bill Grande, Manager of Leviton's Safety Products Division. "The Leviton SmartLock is the first GFCI on the market to meet UL's listing requirement for greater protection. SmartLock's patented lock-out action also helps prevent people from continuing to use a damaged GFCI that no longer offers protection."

Like other electrical and electronic devices, GFCI's can become damaged as a result of transient voltage surges or lightning strikes. With today's GFCI's users may incorrectly assume that a GFCI device that has been reset is still providing ground fault protection when it actually may not. With the Leviton SmartLock once ground fault protection is compromised the device's lockout-action feature mechanically prevents the reset button on the device from re-engaging. This offers an extra measure of safety for users.

Leviton will introduce the new SmartLock GFCI products beginning in the 3rd quarter of 2002. The product rollout will be supported with a comprehensive marketing strategy including print advertising, literature, promotional materials, merchandising support and other information designed to help consumers and installers understand the importance of regular testing of GFCI devices.
