GF Piping Systems' Signet 2552 Metal Magmeter Named as Award Winner in 2007 Flow Control Product Innovation Competition

TUSTIN, Calif., - Nov. 28, 2007 - GF Piping Systems' Signet 2552 Metal Magmeter, the company's newest electromagnetic insertion flow sensor, has been selected as one of the 12 winners in Flow Control magazine's 10th Annual Product Innovation Awards Competition. This prestigious award competition is designed to acknowledge industry's most compelling, leading-edge advances in fluid handling technology in the categories of fluid measurement, control, and containment.

To be eligible, products must have been released after January 1, 2006. Nominations for the competition were accepted from manufacturers and users who were required to complete a five-part questionnaire that described the uniqueness of the nominated technology. The final 53 nominees were presented in Flow Control's June issue for online voting between June 25 and August 3. The 12 winning technologies were announced in the September issue. For each winner, a brief description of the winning product technology was highlighted along with real-life comments from voters.

The patented technology of the Signet 2552 Metal Magmeter is the most innovative part of the design. The patent calls out a molding technique for manufacturing the two metal electrodes into the plastic nose piece at a fixed distance. This allows manufacturing of a high quality product in a repeatable manner and is responsible for the product's outstanding performance characteristics, which include repeatability of ± 0.5 percent of reading at 25° C and superior linearity of ±1 percent plus 0.01 m/s of reading. These characteristics mean excellent, reliable performance, even in extreme conditions of 77°F at 300 psi. The second innovative feature of this product is its adjustable configuration, which allows easy hot-tap installation without disrupting the flow through the pipe, significantly reducing overall costs and process interruption. Sensor installation is accomplished without any special tools via a simple turn of the "Hub" in pipes with pressures up to 300 psi.

As reported in Flow Control's September 2007 issue, actual voters commented that "the 2552 Magmeter is very reliable and allowed hot-tap installation without system shutdown. In addition, the PCB is potted inside the sensor to avoid humidity. Hot-tap feature, ease-of-use, and minimal tooling to install."

In commenting on the award, Charlotte Hill, President and CEO of Georg Fischer Signet LLC, GF Piping Systems' El Monte facility, where the award-winning product was designed and manufactured, had this to say: "The spirit of continual improvement and serving customer needs is what lead to this innovation success. It was through close customer partnerships that the innovative ideas created in research and development were refined to achieve a real-life working product that provided a hot-tappable sensor with the precision, reliability and robustness customers require."

GF Piping Systems supplies a full range of plastic pipe, fittings, tubing, valves, actuators, rotameters, fusion machines, secondary containment, tank linings, heat exchangers, custom products, and sensors and instrumentation for industrial process control.
