NXP SnapSpot GPS Technology and JOBO photoGPS Capture a Location in an Instant

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands and GUMMERSBACH, Germany, March 26/P -- NXP Software and JOBO have announced the first groundbreaking photo geo-tagging product to come out of a collaboration between the two companies. Based on NXP Software's swGPS(TM) SnapSpot technology, these products enable digital camera users to easily capture the GPS coordinates of an outdoor location in the time it takes to press the shutter button. Intuitive and easy to use, this gives users new and exciting ways to search, share, and view their ever-growing photo collections.

NXP Software's unique, patented SnapSpot technology takes a new approach to GPS geo-tagging. Traditional approaches are often obtrusive, slow and power hungry, making them unattractive for digital photography. SnapSpot solves these difficulties by separating the capture and processing of GPS signals.

Launched at the PMA'07 show in Las Vegas, JOBO's photoGPS product is the first result of the collaboration. It automatically embeds detailed geographic information of where the photo was taken, down to street or point-of-interest level, directly into the image's EXIF meta-data. Fitting directly onto the flash hot-shoe, it connects directly to existing digital cameras without any additional cables. It also requires very little power or user interaction, so does not adversely affect camera usability or battery life. With photoGPS, digital photographers can quickly find and view images, utilizing digital maps and aerial views.

"The innovative swGPS technology from NXP Software delivers extremely low power consumption allowing the JOBO photoGPS to operate for a full year using only one single battery. Coupling this with the automated geo-tagging of not only the latitude and longitude, but also the actual country, city, street and nearest point of interest, photoGPS represents an industry-changing breakthrough for image archival and retrieval. It enables photographers to capture a location instantaneously and find any picture within seconds." says Johannes Bockemuhl-Simon, CEO, JOBO AG.
