General Cable Showcases GenSPEED® Brand Products with LP Listing for PoE AT 2016 BICSI Fall Conference

SAN ANTONIO, TX – General Cable (NYSE: BGC) will be exhibiting in Booth #438/339 at the 2016 BICSI Fall Conference in San Antonio, TX where the company will showcase its GenSPEED® Brand line of LP Listed Data Communications cables. General Cable’s GenSPEED Brand cables featuring EfficienC™ Max Technology were the industry’s first cables to be certified as Limited Power (LP) by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) for efficient operation in high power Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. Now addressed in the 2017 revision of the National Electrical Code (NEC), LP listed cables are designated as an allowable option for high-power PoE applications (over 60 watts).

The LP listing, which stands for Limited Power, provides a simple way to ensure installations are future-proofed against the ever-increasing PoE standards and not susceptible to performance  issues caused by heat generation. It accounts for large bundle sizes, high ambient temperatures and other issues related to environmental effects such as enclosed spaces or conduits.

“With PoE technology becoming more established, General Cable has led the industry in providing cables that support the advancements,” said Scott Brown, Vice President of Technology, Global Communications Products, General Cable. “When the new listing became available, it only made sense to work with UL Wire Cable to have the first UL CMP-LP listing, which will make choosing cables to ensure the future safety of a system easier.”

In BICSI Booth #438/339, General Cable will display the impact of heat rise on a 91-cable bundle for typical Category 5e and Category 6 compared to the LP Listed cables. In addition, category 6A cable featuring EfficienC Max technology and the LP listing will power a number of typical Ethernet-powered devices integrated on the display.

Denoted as a suffix, the LP listing is followed by the ampacity rating of the particular cable. GenSPEED cables are available with the following LP ratings and support the subsequent expressed wattage when using 50 Volts over four pairs:

  • UL Listed CMR-LP (0.5A) supporting up to 100 watts – Riser Rated

  • UL Listed CMP-LP (0.5A) supporting up to 100 watts – Plenum Rated

  • UL Listed CMP-LP (0.6A) supporting up to 120 watts – Plenum Rated

  • UL Listed CMP-LP (0.7A) supporting up to 140 watts – Plenum Rated
