Maag Pump Systems Textron Fills a Void in Polyolefin Processing

Zurich, Switzerland-Maag Pump Systems Textron announced today that polyolefin manufacturers now have a new gear pump choice for their vertically fed reactor application processes. The new viscorex® 20" gear pump manages throughputs up to 70,000 lbs./hr (32,000 kg/hr). This new polymer pump was a development based on the needs for capacities greater than the regular sized viscorex 14" gear pump, but with capacity needs smaller than the larger Maag viscorex 44" gear pump.

Maag decided to create a pump to fill the gap between the regular viscorex 14" and the viscorex 44". With this development, Maag is able to offer customers and engineers the choice to design big capacity plants with two extraction pumps in parallel or with a pump only. The new size increase is 2.7 times larger than the previous industry standard, but is significantly less than the larger 44" viscorex. The additional size is perfect for customers who do not need a greater throughput demand.

"We are excited about this new product offering," said Dr. Frank Brinken, CEO of Maag Pump Systems Textron. "We have been working on this in-between capacity design for some time and now feel that we can offer the customer the best design and largest variety of polymer gear pump products in the industry."

Maag Pump Systems Textron's regular sized viscorex 14" is capable of running throughputs up to 35,000 lbs./hr (16,000 kg/hr). The largest of the viscorex gear pumps is currently the 44" with capacities up to 100,000 lbs./hr (45,000 kg/hr), although Maag's facilities are already capable of manufacturing larger sizes.

The new viscorex® 20" gearpump comes standard in cast steel or corrosion resistant steel and weights 9,900 lbs. (4,490 kg). Temperatures can reach up to 662°F (350°C) with discharge pressure up to 70 bar (1,000 psi) for cast steel, and 120 bar (1,700 psi) for corrosion-resistant steel. The newly designed pump will go into operation early this spring at a major polyolefin producer located in the Gulf coast area of the United States. It is also well suited for the polystyrene industry.
