GE's Workhorse 9E Gas Turbine Picked to Help Meet Power Needs of Indonesia's Growing Industrial Sector

Natural Gas-Fired Power Plant will Contribute to the Country's Emissions Reduction Initiative

JAKARTA, INDONESIA - Independent power producer PT Cikarang Listrindo has selected GE (NYSE: GE) gas turbine technology to help support Indonesia's rapidly growing industrial sector. A GE Frame 9E gas turbine and associated generator will add 114 megawatts of power for Cikarang's power station located about 45 kilometers from Jakarta.

By using natural gas, rather than liquid fuel, the project will support the Indonesian government's commitment to a low carbon development path that will reduce the country's CO2 emissions by 26 percent by the year 2020. By GE calculations, a Frame 9E gas turbine using natural gas can reduce NOx emissions by 35 percent and CO2 emissions by 30 percent, compared to the same unit operating on liquid fuel (distillate). The onsite power also will help PT Cikarang Listrindo realize significant savings over the long term, providing a more reliable supply of electricity.

The 9E gas turbine will join eight other GE gas turbines purchased by PT Cikarang Listrindo for previous projects, comprising six Frame 6B units and two 9Es. "We have chosen to continue working with GE, our long-term technology provider for more than 15 years," said Andrew Labbaika, director of PT Cikarang Listrindo. "We are confident that the addition of a third 9E unit to our existing fleet will enable us to provide dependable and uninterrupted power to our industrial clients, helping them improve their operating efficiency."

PT Cikarang Listrindo helps to meet the power needs of Indonesia's industrial sector, which is expected to grow 5 to 6 percent in 2011, by supplying nearly 700 megawatts of electricity to the national grid and a wide range of companies in five industrial estates.

The Frame 9E gas turbine is the workhorse of GE's 50-hertz fleet. With more than 600 units shipped worldwide, the 9E has accumulated more than 23 million hours of utility and industrial service, often in challenging climates ranging from desert heat and tropical humidity to arctic cold. The new unit for Cikarang is expected to begin commercial operation in March of 2012.

"With its proven track record, the 9E is an excellent fit for Indonesia's industrial sector, where reliable and dependable power is crucial," said Widhyawan Prawiraatmadja, country executive for GE Energy, Indonesia. "We are committed to working with our customers to help Indonesia build an efficient, reliable energy infrastructure that can meet the needs of its growing economy and provide a high quality of life for all of its citizens."
