SAN DIEGO, Oct. 11 // -- Reef Point Systems (http://reefpoint.com/) unveiled the Universal Convergence Gateway (UCG), which for the first time gives telecommunications service providers a single platform for delivering voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and multimedia services to their customers over all major fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) network technologies and standards: mobile, fixed-line, and wireless.

The Universal Convergence Gateway is a control point that: consolidates all major networks for accessing a service provider's core infrastructure; adheres to all major carrier IP infrastructure standards; has the intelligence and policy enforcement to assure that the network delivers personalized quality-assured IP services that subscribers have purchased; and protects service provider infrastructure from Internet threats and revenue from theft.
Situated between a service provider's core infrastructure and the networks that subscribers with mobile phones, laptops and PDAs use to access services (i.e., VoIP, web, instant messaging, music and video, IP TV), Reef Point's UCG is the only purpose-built platform to address the full set of session-aware FMC convergence control functions for the full range of access networks and industry standard FMC architectures.

The UCG's session aware control functions address the need for network termination, privacy, infrastructure security, personalized services, and assured quality. These functions include:
o Per-user and/or per-device secure authentication
o Security and denial of service protection (DoS) for Session Initiation
Protocol (SIP)
o Security and DoS protection for IP and media traffic
o Per-flow, per-call quality-of-services
o Traffic shaping and policing
o In-band and out-of-band policy enforcement.
The UCG's patented Flow Application Streaming Technology (FAST) architecture with customized hardware-assist (i.e., ASICs and FPGAs) and deep packet inspection capabilities can simultaneously support 500,000 subscribers and deliver up to 1,000,000 concurrent stateful multimedia sessions at wire speed while applying quality of service, security, and other flow and policy treatments in any combination. Assuring predicable performance at high scalability, it is optimized to meet the needs of FMC dimensioning (i.e., number of concurrent subscribers, subscriber termination and registration, number of concurrent sessions, session setup, and throughput), which are an order of magnitude greater than current networks.
The UCG supports all major access networks (i.e., mobile CDMA and GSM, WiFi, WiMAX, DSL and cable) as well all major FMC architectures as defined by the 3GPP, 3GPP2, ETSI and CableLabs standards bodies:
o IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)
o Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA)
o Picocells and Femtocells
o IMS over WiMAX
o Wireless LAN Access.
The UCG gives service providers the flexibility -- and OPEX and CAPEX efficiencies -- to use the same platform for concurrently deploying multiple FMC solutions or for migrating from one solution to another as their FMC business and deployment strategies evolve.
The UCG platform is the next enhancement in Reef Point's iQ family of FMC gateways, is generally available now and ships in two form factors:
o The iQ8500 Universal Convergence Gateway, which supports up to 500,000
users and up to 1 million concurrent IP multimedia sessions and 5
Gigabit per second aggregate throughput
o The iQ4500 Universal Convergence Gateway, which, in a smaller form
factor, also supports up to 500,000 users and up to 1 million
concurrent IP Multimedia sessions and 2.5 Gigabit per second aggregate
throughput.
