GainSpan Partners with People Power to Develop Cloud Connectivity Solutions to Advance Energy Initiatives

Companies to demonstrate Wi-Fi enabled, cloud-based solution at DESIGN West 2012
SAN JOSE, Calif. - GainSpan® Corporation, a leader in low power Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi connectivity for the Internet of Things, and People Power Company, a provider of cloud-based energy efficiency services, are partnering to develop a cloud connectivity solution to advance energy initiatives. The solution, targeting residential and business customers, will enable system designers to easily connect Smart Energy devices to the cloud via Wi-Fi. The solution will be showcased at DESIGN West, March 26 - 29, in San Jose, CA, in the Symmetry Electronics booth #2006. Sensors and actuators connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi will be remotely monitored and controlled from a smartphone connected wirelessly to the cloud via 3G.
By leveraging the power of the cloud and the ubiquity of Wi-Fi in residential and commercial environments, the joint solution makes it possible for developers to build connected devices that can capture data such as energy use from multiple sensors/devices and send it to the cloud where it is analyzed and priced using current tariffs. The results of the analysis could then be sent to an internet connected display, such as a PC or mobile phone, in the form of a graphical dashboard, alarms or messages. M2M applications can also be enabled by activating automatic responses, under certain conditions.
The People Power Energy Services Platform (ESP) is a scalable carrier grade cloud using open source, standards based, energy management software. It is device agnostic and transforms complicated real-time information from energy consuming devices and smart grid data into compelling reports. It uses behavioral analytics to provide easy controls that maximize customers' lifestyle or business demands, anywhere, anytime.
GainSpan's low power Wi-Fi technology makes it easy to add Wi-Fi connectivity to nearly any device, any microcontroller based "Thing." With its fully certified modules, designers can add Wi-Fi to 8-32-bit microcontrollers - through a serial interface and using AT commands. The modules use minimal host resources and come pre-loaded with serial to Wi-Fi firmware with complete Wi-Fi functionality including security, WPS and provisioning features running on the module as well as a networking stack, an embedded HTTP server with network configuration pages, and limited AP capability for ease of provisioning.
