Furnace Power/Control System decouples current, voltage control.

Press Release Summary:

Electric arc furnace power system and control scheme offers improved control over arc ignition and arc stability while also reducing flicker and oscillation. Solution utilizes saturable reactor, located in power circuit between main transformer and arc electrodes, that is controlled by variable DC signal, which varies impedance of reactor. DC source is controllable as independent variable in furnace control system, ensuring current and voltage control are effectively decoupled.

Warner Power Announces New Arc Furnace Power System and Control Scheme

WARNER, New Hampshire - Warner Power has announced an enhanced electric arc furnace power system and control scheme*. This offers improved control over arc ignition and arc stability, as well as reducing flicker and oscillation.

Drawing on over 50 years' experience in specialized magnetics and power systems, Warner Power utilizes a saturable reactor, located in the power circuit between the main transformer and the arc electrodes. The saturable reactor is controlled by a variable DC signal, which varies the impedance of the reactor. The DC source is controllable as an independent variable in the furnace control system, so that current and voltage control are effectively decoupled.

Director of Advanced Technology Souheil Benzerrouk commented, "Decoupling voltage and current offers great control flexibility. This can offer substantially improved arc stability, while providing optimum ignition characteristics. In addition the reactor provides over-current protection, to prevent damage to the power supply or electrodes in the event of a short-circuit."
