Full Production Vacuum Carburizing Offered by Solar Atmospheres

Three years of intense research and engineering have lead to the production of Solar Manufacturingfs Low Torr Vacuum Carburizing furnace. Now operating at Solar Atmospheresf Eastern PA commercial heat treating facility, the furnace has successfully carburized thousands of parts in the 24 x 24 x 72 chamber. Vacuum carburizing extends tool or part life by attaining a specified case and core hardness.

The furnace was engineered to provide optimal processing results and operational usability. The 10 bar gas quenching furnace provides the most rapid and effective quenching of the forty furnaces Solar Atmospheres utilizes. The super fast quench is essential for retaining the case hardness. The insitu operation eliminates extra part handling and furnace maintenance. Microprocessor controls enable customization as well as cycle repeatability.

Carburizing in vacuum also adds several unique benefits to extend part wear life. This includes the minimal distortion that results from the gas quenching and precise temperature controls. The process also eliminates microstructure intergranular oxidation (IGO)in the carburized case that, over time, may cause part failure. The process also produces compressive stresses for improved fatigue life. The beauty of vacuum carburizing is the bright, clean parts after processing.

A particular application that lends itself to vacuum carburizing is gear usage. The process not only minimizes distortion, but provides a uniform case depth, including gear root to pitch ratios.

Vacuum carburizing services are offered by Solar Atmospheres with the option of purchasing a furnace built by Solar Manufacturing.
