Fujitsu Launches Nearline Fibre Channel Drives for ETERNUS Storage Systems

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 5 -- Fujitsu Computer Systems today announced availability of Nearline Fibre Channel (FC) disk drives for ETERNUS(TM) storage systems. These new high-capacity, high-reliability, low-cost storage drives have been designed for use with the Fujitsu ETERNUS enterprise disk array and the ETERNUS mid-range disk array storage systems, which now support a 4Gbps Host Fibre Channel interface.

The new Nearline FC disk drive, which employs redundant Fibre Channel interfaces, is an alternative to more expensive Fibre Channel disk drives. Fujitsu Nearline FC is a very reliable nearline disk drive, combining the speed of online storage with the economy of offline storage. The new 500GB Nearline FC disk drives for ETERNUS storage systems deliver over 500TB of capacity in one ETERNUS system, and dramatically reduce the cost of data storage. The new Nearline FC disk drives, available for both new and currently deployed Fujitsu ETERNUS storage systems, address these needs.

High capacity, high reliability at low cost
Fujitsu Nearline FC disk drives are available in disk capacities of 500GB and 400GB. Costing far less than Fibre Channel drives, Fujitsu Nearline FC drives include redundant Fibre Channel interfaces to ensure excellent reliability. With the new drives, the storage capacity of the ETERNUS storage systems can be expanded up to 500TB, depending on the system.

Efficient backups without stopping operations
The ETERNUS storage systems come equipped with support for Advanced Copy, a fast backup and recovery method that uses D2D transfer. Advanced Copy supports two modes of data replication, Equivalent Copy (EC) and One-Point Copy (OPC). With EC a working storage domain is synchronized with a duplicate storage domain that can be used for disaster recovery, backup and recovery, and many other applications. With OPC, data in the working storage domain is copied directly to the backup in a matter of seconds, simplifying the ability to create multiple generations of backups.

Data storage optimized to the data's value
The ETERNUS storage systems support intermixing Fibre Channel disk drives and Nearline FC disk drives, allowing maximum flexibility in system configuration. As the value of data changes during its lifecycle, it can be stored on the most appropriate medium for an optimal balance between operating costs and access speed.

Lower energy consumption reduces environmental burden
The ETERNUS "eco-mode" feature (available on ETERNUS3000) employs Massive Array of Inactive Disks (MAID) technology that stops the spindle of infrequently accessed drives. With it customers can realize energy savings of up to 20 percent (based on 6TB of active storage on Fibre Channel disk drives and three generations of backups onto 18TB of Nearline FC disk drives).

Fast host interface for improved access speeds
ETERNUS storage systems now include 4Gbps Fibre Channel interfaces, doubling previous disk-array access speeds.

Availability
ETERNUS storage systems with Nearline FC disk drives will be available on December 22, 2005.
