Freescale and Sagem Communications Collaborate to Deliver Best Broadband Multimedia Experience to Telecom Operators

Freescale's i.MX31 applications processor selected by Sagem Communications to drive new products providing full set of multimedia services

PARIS (Freescale Technology Forum) - Oct. 9, 2007 - Freescale Semiconductor today announced the integration of the i.MX31 applications processor into the new Sagem MyCommunicationCenter, a web tablet product designed and developed by Sagem Communications for Telecom operators.

The Sagem MyCommunicationCenter is a portable wireless touch screen that drives home services and feature-rich multimedia applications enhancing the ease-of-use experience without having to turn on a personal computer. Designed to go together with Sagem's next generation of residential gateways, the Sagem MyCommunicationCenter features internet access with an integrated browser, voice and video telephony and exceptional audio, video and photo capabilities. This innovative device addresses the demand for a completely integrated and, therefore, simplified service to administrate user content and monitor home services along with the best high-speed internet and multimedia experience.

The i.MX31 processor is a highly integrated and innovative multimedia engine at the heart of some of the most popular portable media devices. It features an advanced image processing unit designed to deliver an impressive viewing experience.

"We are very pleased the i.MX31 processor has been selected by Sagem Communications, a longstanding and innovative partner, to deliver home multimedia applications. This device will give operators a new experience and eases the use of personal content and service management," said Paul Marino, general manager and director of Freescale's Multimedia Applications Division. "The i.MX applications processor family is designed for portable media applications and is engineered for high performance and low power - a perfect match for Sagem's IP-based products."

Freescale's i.MX family of application processors is ideal for emerging product markets based on the Internet, such as VoIP devices, wireless IP phones and WiFi phones, as well as a number of multimedia devices. The powerful i.MX31 and i.MX31L multimedia applications processors integrate an image processing unit engineered to support VGA 30 frames per second for outstanding video quality. The i.MX processors are designed to support the major video standards, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, DivX, H.263 and H.264, with best-in-class digital video compression.

Smart Speed technology
The i.MX31 processors leverage Freescale's Smart Speed technology architecture, an intelligent integrated approach using hardware accelerators to offload the CPU and a crossbar switch to bring parallelism to the system. The 6x5 Smart Speed crossbar switch almost eliminates wait states. Smart Speed technology results in fewer effective cycles per instruction (eCPI), enabling the i.MX31 processors to drive equivalent performance to processors with clock speeds up to 3GHz, but without the power consumption penalty that goes with higher operating frequencies.
