Fortron® PPS 6165A6 from Ticona Gets NSF Standard 61 Certification for Use in Potable Water Applications

Florence, Ky., Sulzbach, Germany, Shanghai, PR China - Ticona Engineering Polymers today announced that Fortron® 6165A6 became the first mineral- and glass-reinforced grade in its polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) portfolio to receive National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 61 certification for use in applications involving contact with drinking water. The NSF approval covers both cold and hot potable water service at 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit) and 82 degrees Celsius (179 degrees Fahrenheit).

"Designed for use in fluid handling applications, Fortron® 6165A6 PPS can replace more costly copper, brass, zinc, aluminum, stainless steel, and other metals and thermoplastics that are traditionally used in potable water service applications," said Ed Hallahan, technical marketing manager - Ticona High Performance Polymers. "It can withstand greater pressures and loads, aggressive chlorine exposures and higher temperatures than most other high performance thermoplastics, while offering excellent barrier properties."

The Fortron PPS high flow 6165A6 grade from Ticona, available in natural and black, is used in potable water service applications that must maintain dimensional stability, thermal resistance and strength over a wide temperature range. The Fortron 6165A6 PPS grade is 65 percent mineral- and glass- reinforced and, compared to 40 percent glass- reinforced grades, offers:

o Enhanced load-bearing, rigidity and tensile-flex-compressive creep resistance

o Lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) for better precision over a wide temperature range

o Lower and more uniform shrinkage for tighter tolerance molded parts

o Improved flatness and warpage

Other NSF-Standard 61 listed Fortron PPS grades include 40 percent glass-filled 1140L4 (standard) and 1140L6 (high flow) PPS, which were successfully tested by the NSF International, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that is the world leader in standards development and product certification. Both grades are used in potable water service applications that require higher strength and impact than mineral- and glass-reinforced Fortron 6165A6.

A complete listing of all Ticona materials that meet NSF-Standard 61 requirements is available at the Product and Service Listings section of the NSF International web site at www.nsf.com.
