FMS Corporation Awarded Grand Prize in Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition

MINNEAPOLIS - FMS Corporation received a Grand Prize in the Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition from the Metal Powder Industries Federation. The award was for an assembly of five complex powder metal steel parts for an all-terrain vehicle transmission in the lawn and garden/off-highway category for FMS customer Team Industries. The award was presented at PowderMet 2009, the International Conference on Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials, in Las Vegas.

The transmission assembly consisted of two shift forks, two sector gears and a park pawl. The sector gears have AGMA Class 6 spines.

"This award-winning project is an outstanding example of the innovation, precision, performance, complexity and economy possible with powder metallurgy," says John Sweet, president, FMS Corporation. "By choosing powder metal over machined parts, our customer, Team Industries, saved an estimated 60 percent in the manufacture of this ATV transmission assembly."

Four of the parts in the assembly were made from powder metal sinter-hardened steel, with a density of 7.2 g/cm3 and minimum ultimate tensile strength of 100,000 psi. One of the two sector gears was made from 4300 steel, with tensile strength of 160,000 psi and 30 HRC minimum hardness. The other parts required minimal machining.

Powder metallurgy is an automated metalworking process that forms metal powder into precision components for use in auto engines and transmissions, business machines, hardware, biomedical and other products. Powdered metal typically uses more than 97 percent of the starting raw material in the finished part, producing very little scrap metal; and is environmentally friendly compared to other processing methods. More than 800 million pounds of powder metallurgy parts are made annually in North America.

Minneapolis-based FMS Corporation has been family owned and operated since 1946. The company's Powder Metal Division provides customized powder metal manufacturing services, from parts design and alloy development through production and assembly and custom prototyping. FMS works with materials including low-alloy steels, stainless steels, brass, bronze, soft-magnetic materials and exotic alloys. The company specializes in low to medium volume parts that would be difficult to produce using traditional metal-forming methods. Irregularly shaped parts, such as gears, cams and those requiring keyways, can be manufactured economically and consistently with powder metal processes.

Team Industries, based in Bagley, Minn., serves recreational, agriculture and industrial off-highway markets with engineering through assembly for power-train and chassis components.
