FKI Logistex Wins US$ 190 Million Contracts for New Doha International Airport

Main contractor is announced for massive baggage handling installation at major new US$ 7.5 billion Middle East airport

Date: 12/03/2007

FKI Logistex®, a global leader in integrated material handling solutions, has won its largest baggage handling order ever - a US$ 123 million complete system and US$ 67 million five-year, full service and maintenance contract - for the New Doha International Airport. This project also represents a first for FKI Logistex in the Middle East, with the new US$ 7.5 billion Qatar airport expected to become one of the largest in this important and rapidly growing market.

Due to be operational in September 2009 with final handover in March 2010, the massive size and scope of this major installation is illustrated by the tremendous range of equipment needed to handle and sort some 19,500 items of luggage each hour, generated by 20 million passengers per year.

Providing project management and design time of more than 100,000 hours, FKI Logistex is acting as the main contractor, supplying and integrating equipment including check-in units; over 10,000 metres of departing, transfer and terminating conveyors; explosive detection systems with 17 dual-view screening units; seven CTX screening machines and 72 operator workstations; extensive control systems; two high speed tilt-tray sorters; 40 barcode and 34 RFID scanners, 52 fire doors and 54 machine control PLC's.

The FKI Logistex S-3000E Tilt-tray sorters, operating at 1.9 metres per second will each be 540 metres long, incorporating 38 high-speed inductions and 172 discharge positions. Upper level control systems include 25 state-of-the-art servers in a fully redundant configuration, with more than 25 workstations and laptops, 88 information monitors, nine large video walls and a fully redundant Cisco network.

Erik Hoffmann-Petersen, Director for Airport Systems, FKI Logistex Europe, says: "This prestigious order is an important milestone for our company as, apart from its size, it opens up the Middle East market - a major growth area for our baggage handling technologies".

Erik explains: "It presents a tremendous opportunity to expand our installed customer base, particularly as we are providing a full, five-year Service and Maintenance contract. FKI Logistex will establish an extensive local back-up organisation with some 125 employees, which will provide the regional facilities needed to help grow our airport business in this key area".

The company's Customer Service and Support is widely acknowledged to be one of the best in the industry. It has an excellent track record and will provide fast and efficient back-up during the entire lifetime of every FKI Logistex baggage handling installation. Ensuring optimal performance and the system's long-term capabilities, an international network of 24/7 help desks deliver trouble-free access to on and off-site technical assistance, maintenance and training.

In terms of the people, finance, back-up systems and controls needed to complete a baggage handling installation on time and on budget, FKI Logistex is fully geared to operate as a total solution designer and project integrator - as in the case of the New Doha International Airport.

This involves the company accepting full responsibility for specifying, installing and commissioning all FKI Logistex and third-party products and services involved in delivering the project.

Constructed in three phases, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority is building the New Doha International Airport in response to projected demand for additional international passenger capacity in the region. The airport is being constructed on a 5,400-acre site near the city of Doha and, when completed, will be approximately two-thirds the size of the city! It involves a massive reclamation project, as over half the area of the airport will be built on land reclaimed from the sea.
